The neonatal units in the West Midlands Neonatal Network work together to make sure babies and families receive the care they need as close as possible to home. All units have skilled nurses, doctors and other health care staff providing high quality 24-hour care.

To make sure your baby receives the right care in the right place it is sometimes necessary for your baby to be transferred to another neonatal unit. It is the aim of the network to keep families as close to home as possible. The unit your baby is moved to may not be your local hospital or where you booked for your maternity care but this depends on the level of care your baby needs. You may be transferred closer to your home address before discharge so that ongoing care can be provided by the team at your local hospital.

In the West Midlands there are:

5 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) which provide all levels of care.

5 Local Neonatal Units (LNUs) which provide short term intensive care, high dependency and special care.

4 Special Care Baby Units (SCBUs) which provide immediate intensive care, short-term high dependency care and special care.
