Because African Americans were segregated they couldn't work the same jobs as whites. They weren't even payed well as much as whites. Most African Americans were stuck in sharecropping jobs. Sharecropping is working mainly in the farmland. People wanted to work in better conditions and at least higher pay.

Along with the segregation, political rights were also denied. People couldn't have a say in anything. Their opinions didn't matter in the South. They wanted to migrate so that they can speak their opinions without being threatened or worse.

Because the World War 1 was taking place during the great migration, many white men had to leave their jobs and someone had to work in them. African American's were given the opportunity to work in factories with better conditions. Because of this they were able to escape racial oppression and lynchings.

Back in the South Africans were denied education. Therefore, they got the advantage to go to public school. Of course this was great advantage because they could become something out of it. Even though there was still segregation but not as bad as in the South.

Life in the North was obviously somewhat better than in the South. There was education and better job opportunities, but of course it had its cons. One of the cons were; poor housing conditions. African American's obviously didn't have much rights or equality still. Another was overcrowding. Since so many were moving into the north, they didn't have much room for all, underemployment goes along with the crowding. There was crime, harassment by local whites and law which was hard for them.
