G-Eazy is an established hip-hop/rap artist signed to Sony who has made many unique, global success hits like this music video I will be analyzing, this of which was written and performed by G-Eazy himself. The producer of this song and the album the track is from was Southside Records, specifically Christoph Andersson from this organisation.

 The genre of this song is mixture of rap and hip-hop due to the interesting beat he uses to rap along too. In addition to this, the typical characteristics we would expect to see in a video like this would be expensive gold jewellery (chains, rings, necklaces and watches), expensive clothing or dress style, sports cars, smoking, alcohol, an urban setting, large groups of predominantly males and sometimes the sexual portrayal of women.

The first example I can recall demonstrating a relation between the visuals and the lyrics is at 1:34, this is where the artist raps the line “up and down on a Wednesday” whilst followed up with a medium-long shot of an old American car bouncing up and down on its side, this of which shows the literal relation of the lyrics against the visuals of the music video at this current moment.

 In addition to this, another example from the video showing a relationship between the lyrics and visuals is at 0:32 where again G-Eazy raps the line of “I kinda feel there is no girl I cannot get”. This lyric is synced with the visual shot showing a close-up of a women smiling into the camera, suggesting the literal meaning that the artist assumes he can attract women. The relationship between the lyrics and visuals throughout this video suggests that the visuals show the literal meanings of the lyrics said by the artist.
 Furthermore, another example showing a relationship between the lyrics and visuals within the music video is at 1:06. At this moment the artist raps the line “It’s like I’m always found where the trouble at”, this line is followed up by a visual shot showing a group of riot police on the streets, potentially at the scene of an incident.

In the music video for ‘Calm Down’, I can recognize the relationship between the visuals and the music due to certain techniques used to cut and show certain visuals that relate to the certain sounds. 

The first example I can recall showing a relationship between the music and visuals is at 0:37, at this moment a background snare noise can be heard. Whilst this sound from the song is heard the visuals follow with a flashing transition between two clips, this is when we see very fast, short cuts on each clip overlapping one another for the duration of the snare beat. This flashing transition is repeated throughout the song every time we hear this snare/trap beat from the track.
 
Equally, another example demonstrating a clear link between the music and visuals is the cutting of clips in sync with the bass beat of the song. This relationship between the music and visuals is used throughout the whole music video, mainly to make it more interesting to watch and to demonstrate continuity. This cutting technique is significantly noticeable in the music video through 0:19 up to 0:27, this moment of which has a regular cuts of clips to the beat of the music.

Throughout the music video I have noticed a repetition in the use of the same style of close-up of the artist where you can recognize the foundations of buildings and reinforcing the star image motif of G-Eazy.

 The first example I can recall demonstrating a star image motif across the music video to Calm Down and other music videos from this artist including ‘Drifting’, ‘Me, myself and I’, ‘You Got Me’ and 'Guala' was the use of a close up of G-Eazy looking directly into the camera whilst using very exaggerated body language, particularly the use of the hands, to reinforce and suggest that he has suffered a hardship to make it to where he is now. This star image motif can be recognized to attempt to reinforce the typical aggressive and dangerous characteristics we associate with rappers and artist involved in the hip-hop industry.

From watching the video I did get the sense that the artist was trying to put the females shown in certain clips were on sexual display. An example referencing to the notion of looking is at 1:11, at this moment the music video goes into slow motion, displaying a group of women dancing whilst looking directly into the camera, as if it is trying to reinforce a sexual reference here. In addition to this, the lyrics sung whilst at this moment in the video also link very closely with the visuals and reference to the notion of looking due to the lines following “If I like her all of this **** would only take is a double tap”, this of which also reinforces the reference to the notion of looking in the music video of women on sexual display. 

Furthermore, another example in the video where the artist references to the notion of looking is at 0:34, at this moment we see another slow motion close-up of a female looking straight into the camera, possibly attempting to reinforce the sexual display and notion of looking. These references to the notion of looking for in terms of sexual display may have been used as a result of the common characteristics we associate with hip-hop and rap lifestyles, therefore the artist could be attempting to reinforce these ideas.

During the artist's other music videos, particularly in 'Far Alone', 'Me, Myself and I and 'Guala' , there is the repeated use of wearing a leather jacket. In majority of these videos the artist wears a black leather jacket, as if it attempting to reinforce the lifestyle and fashion sense that G-Eazy lives by. This is partly a performance based music video due to the majority of the clips are the artists rapping directly to the camera as if they were performing on a stage. Similarly, the reasons for this also being a concept-based music video is due to the some clips show shots of the scenery of cars driving around that have no connection to the lyrics of performance of the clip.
