Some methodologies to develop these strategies are outlined above. Skimming is used to read only what is important and pick up on main ideas within the text. Scanning involves looking for a word, specific fact or piece of information without reading everything. These are essential reading skills. It is important to train pupils to look for key words and quickly identify words.

Below is a list of some strategies for using picture books in the older classes

Pick a book that is relevant to the children’s lives

Interpret meaning of pictures books

Ensure you pick a good quality picture book. As suggested by Mary Roche (2015, p.101) ‘good picture books should not just be an illustrated story, rather the pictures and text should complement each other in a special way, each leaving gaps for the reader to fill, perhaps even telling different narratives and demanding different types of analyses and comprehension’

Share a book on an interactive whiteboard, if you can. This means more pupils will be able to see the illustrations clearly.

Do a “picture walk” of the book first. Displaying the illustrations gives students time to confirm their ideas and predictions. Every child can engage equally in this activity.

At times read the book aloud to allow children to hear for pleasure before diving in

When reading, pause when appropriate to focus on and discuss the book’s plot characters and theme.

To push discussions about picture books further treat it as a special lesson. Act as facilitator. Refrain from making judgements on what children suggest as this may lead discussions. Allow wait time. Mary Roche suggests discussing picture books in a circle. When one person speaks, they ‘tip’ the person to their left or right to allow discussion to continue around the circle.

Scaffold discussion by providing supporting sentences ‘I agree with X because’. Supporting children in giving a reason for their opinions is important.

Establish rules for discussion e.g. no interrupting, everybody gets a go, no mocking people when they are talking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_R5wfmWIlQ&t=188s
A concept sort is a vocabulary and comprehension strategy used to familiarise students with the vocabulary of a new topic or book. Teachers provide students with a list of terms or concepts from reading material. Students place words into different categories based on each word's meaning. Categories can be defined by the teacher or by the students. For example, provide children with 15 or so words from new novel or SESE topic. Working individually, in small groups or as a class, have the students sort the cards or objects into meaningful groups. The groups (or categories) can be pre-defined by the teacher (often called a closed sort) or by the students (often called an open sort).

Video example of Concept sorts (while this is a younger class the same approach can be adapted in the senior classes, just choose more age-appropriate vocabulary)

This strategy connects two different vocabulary words in a unit of study. Students choose two words that go together and explain the connection between these words. Then, in pairs challenge them to create an oral story using the words. This allows the children to use the words in context and provides you with an excellent method of assessing the children’s understanding of the words.
