Background of Jurong

In the early 1900s, Jurong was uncharted territory, mainly dominated by swamps with low hills covered in shrubs and thick jungle. Jurong started to develop in the 1970s when estates such as Boon Lay, Taman Jurong, Teban Gardens... were built. Yuhua, Teban Gardens, Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak formed Jurong East.

Iconic Places in Jurong

1. Jurong's Railway stations

- Jurong KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) Railway line:

The KTM Railway used to have an extention branching out from Bukit Timah railway station. Many old tracks are still intact. The first train ran on 11 November 1965 to Shipyard Road. The land has been converted for more productive uses.

- Singapore's High Speed Rail to KL:

It will be starting from Jurong, all the way to Kuala Lumpur. The upcoming railways has improved convenience for residents.

2. Lakeside and Chinese Garden:

It has the nature element in it. This allows residents to move away from the industrial areas in Jurong. This gives them a break and are able to enjoy the environment around them.

Many people agreed that they have a favourite place though they do not really own any fond memories there. They go to the park, playground, coffee shop, etc... They usually go there with their family members and we think that that makes some places special to them because it is where the home is and that place is where they seek comfort. For some people, this is what makes their neighbourhood special to them. One person who was interviewed shared that it was her friends that made the place special because they accompany her everyday. She doesn't have much family but these friends made her feel warm. Many of them stayed for only a few years, but they have found a favourite place, which adds on to how much the neighbourhood means to them.
