He tried to strengthen the Articles of Confederation, but he was unsuccessful.
Hamilton’s son, Philip, died in a duel because he was trying to defend Alexander Hamilton in 1801. This burdened him.  In 1804 when Hamilton and Burr dueled, they used the same pistols from Philip’s duel.

At the time, Hamilton was trying to strength the national government and this rebellion helped him argue that the national government was weak.
