Here’s someone who used to strongly believe that learning is a very personal journey . Hence his job as a manager is to only create the right opportunities for people to have those intense learning experiences. As a practice, he used to throw people into deep waters without a life jacket.
Signature practice : Usually after a meeting with a client on a project he will call office and give a high level objective about the goal to be achieved as an elevator pitch (eg: finish performance review feedback for 20 managers in 20days). Does not even question if the person knows how to do it or he needs some support… but will hold the person accountable if the goal is not achieved …. In that process, the person who has been delegated the task will always go out of his way to figure a way to do this ….

All it takes is just meticulous planning and implementation to achieve impeccable results. Hence, was known for working with young graduates from tier 3 B schools and doing extraordinary things
Signature practice : Each of his team member will get a excel sheet every morning stating what he or she is supposed to or not supposed to do … Everyone is held accountable to following this excel sheet

Push & test the people with their limits and bring out the best and hence identify good performers

Leaders like Santosh give the reportees chance to put on their thinking hats, encourages to take own decisions, ppl will go all out to abide by their take

creating right opportunities for people

He demonstrates trust and provides freedom to the team members to explore and learn.

The resources are accountable for their tasks and can explore creative ways to complete the task

Forcing the process of learning to enfold to ensure that these practices and experiences stick with the resource

Learning trajectory gets quite steep and people get hands on experience quite early.

Org - the clients will be happy to see the roadmap and the team can achieve
Team - If the team members are fast learning and dynamic, it is a golden oppty for them to figure out things and solve for soemthing which they dont know. Immense learning for them.

It gives the person a way to learn and adapt to ambiguous situations.
Since he has to reach out to multiple, it becomes a way to connect across the organization

A holistic development of employees as they need to do lot of work and understanding on their own, also new and creative ideas will come up

Organization: He is very optimistic and can think of achieving the impossible for the organization
Team Members: Freedom to the team as to figure out the objective rather than providing a standard set of ways and thinking beyond

Advantage would be learning curve for indivual will be very fast

As Santosh is a manager who believes learning is a personal journey and as a practise he would let his team figure out what needs to be done with full freedom. Here the advantage is whoever is assigned work they think of all the possibilities and go way beyond their capability to close the task

A person can learn on his own by exploring things and he can study/reachout to different people and get different ideas where he can comeup with one single approach which is required for his work.

Doesn't help create or nurture good performers

Santosh may lose control of the situation since he is leaving everything in hands of the team, he is giving overview but not directions, there are no steps in place for corrective measures

sometimes Team can be overwhelmed without guidance

There is a risk of misunderstanding of assigned tasks, incorrect output and delays.

Not enough clarity, hence more time spent on that activity, may have a different output of the activity performed

High risk, as this involves a client stakeholder. Therefore certain areas of expertise/training would be required to ensure that the resource is heading in the right direction in the interest of time, cost, effort for said deliverable

People can go their individual directions and not work towards common goal

Org - the team may not be able to deliver as expected, attrition
Team - anxiety, performance pressure

It puts the person in a precarious position especially if they are less experienced in the role.
It could take a lot of time for the person to learn and adapt to the situation

Lot of time is spent on understanding the problem at hand, also lot of extensive research work needs to be done. So on high level his approach will take time for delivery and employee would always be under stress and pressure

organization: Lot of risks in terms of achieving the goal, may need strategies for averting crisis in this kind of approach
Team: Lot of risk in such a approach as the team may eventually feel frustrated for no support ,direction and being held accountable with proper training

This approach would by the word go be on panic mode ....so for longterm its not good for indiviual or to the company

Disadvantage of Santosh leadership style is during few situations where the team is under pressure of delivery they feel lost and couldn't deliver on time with out proper guidance

Can lead to take wrong decisions sometimes and can miss out timelines due to lack of confidence

Team has clarity on their tasks and expectations.

Clarity of who is performing and how is present, more accountability

Not writing off the implementation potential and capabilities just from one's academic credentials

It help develop skillsets and churn results for the organization at low cost

Org - Cost savings in terms of compensation
Team - great opportunity to learn on the go

Even the non-IIM/IIT graduates get to involve in strategic roles.

An exponential learning curve for the employees, also employees will cost less to the organisation

Organization: Clarity in terms of achieving the goals and make use of resources in a more effective way
Team member: Needed direction and support available

This approach helps indivual to bring there better side on wholesome front

Michael as a manager feels that all it takes is just meticulous planning and implementation to achieve impeccable results.
