7-1 Refugee: Analyzing Titles in the Novel by Jaclyn Netis

Now that we have examined what titles can show us, let's evaluate different examples of titles from throughout our book. If you find it helpful to consider what information is in the first paragraph of the chapter and how that relates to the title, you may use that information to make connections between our lesson on titles and the content of the book.

The title literally tells readers that the chapter is going to be about Josef's point of view.

The author chose this location because it's letting us know that Josef is currently on a ship heading somewhere. It's telling us the year, in that time period Germany where Josef is from was being invaded by Nazi's so Josef had to leave.

The author includes the time away to let us know how long it's been since Josef had left his home country.

Based on the title, the mood of this chapter is exciting because in the paragraph they are on the MS St. Louis which was a boat that is offering them nice service, and Ruthie was able to see her first cartoon and they were given good meals.
