J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist, became famous for his leading role as scientific director of the Manhattan Project, a project in World War I that helped develop the first atomic bombs. The atomic bomb changed the global power equation significantly and led WW2 to its end. Oppenheimer represents "Thinkers" from the IB learner profile, which he applied to solve complex scientific problems as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project. To come up with the initial atomic bombs, his leadership needed creativity and profound thinking. IB programs are designed for an education that helps students understand the intricacies of their surroundings while at the same time having the capacity and capability for future decision-making.

Ernest Rutherford’s gold foil experiment fundamentally changed the atomic theory by revealing the presence of a small, dense nucleus at the center of the atom. Before this, the atom was thought to be a "plum pudding" of evenly distributed charge. Rutherford’s discovery led to the Rutherford model of the atom, which introduced the concept of a nucleus and set the stage for further developments. This breakthrough significantly advanced our understanding of atomic physics and laid the groundwork for numerous technological and scientific advancements.

Rutherford demonstrates the IB Learner Profile feature "Inquirers." His intellectual curiosity and rigorous testing prompted him to question established hypotheses and gain an enhanced understanding of atomic structure. On the other hand, his work indicates a dedication to inquiry and a desire for knowledge, both of which are crucial traits of an inquirer according to the IB learner profile. Regarding to the IB learner profile, it focuses on academic performance, critical thinking, and global understanding. Additionally promotes students to improve their personal and social abilities, think independently, and grasp different points of view. By combining courses and promoting inquiry-based learning, the IB equips students to be thinking, active, and responsible global citizens.
