Our group’s decision regarding the soil in our garden will be to manage the schedule and amount of water use and salts in the soil. The best approach will be to feed our soil with biota, which is the collective term that encompasses all organisms that spend a significant portion of their life cycle within a soil profile, or at the soil-litter interface. Organisms such as earthworms , protozoa, fungi, bacteria, different arthropods will feed the plant. We will see these organisms by digging up in moist, loose, and shady (covered) soil and begin to dig and see if there are any earthworms residing there, the different arthropods and nematodes grow naturally on just about every surface of the earth so it will not be difficult to already have those in our soil. You can also find fungi in rotting wood and in the forest growing on trees and in the ground, so easily we can collect it and add it to our soil. And in addition, we will add compost to the soil to add any other necessary nutrients for the plant.

Composting is important because it adds nutrients to the soil without using harmful chemicals. For a compost pile to be functional there needs to be a correlation between Nitrogen-rich (old vegetables) ingredients and Carbon-rich (dead leaves) ingredients. This will also help in keeping unused vegetables/fruits from going into the trash.

The designs include crops that are already in the garden like grapes, artichokes, lavender, pomegranates, and mint. There are two designs, one for spring/earlysummer and one for late summer/winter. The garden has a combination of mostly two different crops for each of the beds. The crops chosen were because of their combination together that would result in a profitable yield.
