Although it is not in my top plan to become a teacher, it is still in the back of my mind. I would love to teach K-4 if I do decide to teach. What is something that worries you about teaching in today's society?

I really like how you phrased this question! I think that considering teaching is a big responsibility, but will be so rewarding! I think the biggest concern I have about teaching is dealing with the behaviors of students. I think having to discipline a child who doesn't receive that at home will be very challenging!

-Shelbie Melson

I have worked with K-3 and currently work with 4-6. The biggest thing I struggle with is the lack of respect and entitlement a-lot of our students have.
Many of them think they are untouchable and can never get into trouble and when they do, it's never their fault.
Sometimes it's completely unrelated to their home life, but for others it's a direct result of their home life.
I have been told everything from "you're sexist" to "you hate me" and my favorite, "you are qualified to discipline me". Many times the parents agree with the school on ISS or loss of recess or writing sentences, others, their child is perfect and can do no wrong.
Call me old-fashioned but when I was growing up you were taught respect and you better respect your elders. Now I think that is lost on the younger generation.
I do good and keep my cool and just tell myself that they are growing adults and I had to learn "the hard way" at times, but sometimes it is hard and they make me feel like I'm a crazy person.

I think the biggest thing I am worried about with teaching this newer generation of students is their attitudes and privilege. With the students being born to mostly teens now days, I think they will believe they have more control over what happens in the classroom. Discipline is going to be a hard thing to have to do, since lots of children are not getting that at home. I am saying all of this out of experience from watching how friends take care of their children. Even kids in the high school, that I have watched grow up, are terribly disrespectful to teachers and admin. It is going to be incredibly hard to work with the new generation of children, in my opinion.

I have always wanted to be teacher ever since I started playing classroom with my stuffed animals. However, with society and current social media we are seeing teachers leaving their positions and never going back. This has definitely made me consider do I really want to teach? As of right now, classes such as this one really keep me motivated and ready for the educator world! Without future educators like us, we will not get to educate and make an impact on future leaders of the WORLD! This was a great question!
