Problem:
A drought that killed farm animals and destroyed crops.
Solution:
SAP (Super-absorbent polymer)
A substance that makes the soil work better absorbing water and prevent droughts.
Solution problems:
It is not friendly with the planet bc of some of the chemicals of the SAPs, they are pretty expensive, their worth rounds 2000$-3000$ per metric tonne.
The most affected people are the farmers, that cant afford that money, making it hard to buy for they.
Solution:
A South African student called Kiara discovered that orange and avocado peels work as well as SAPs.
So, she created a powder from the peels that worked as a natural sap.
The difference between the 2 substances is that Kiara's powder was planet friendly, bc is natural, but SAPs have chemicals that can hurt the enviroment, another BIG difference is that the cost of Kiara's powder was way less than SAPs, being 30$-60$ per metric tonne, 100-50 times less expensive!
Also, is more effective.
In the same year of the drought (2016), she got the top prize from the google science fair, with 16 years!
