1. If we focus our use of technology on sustainability, it will save us. Climate change and a lack of resources, such as food, water, and fuels, are the most pressing issues faced by human. Technology can increase the production of food and enhance food storage. Technology such as desalination can also help diversify water sources, reducing the chance of running out of water. Shortage of natural resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas can also be addressed by developing renewable energy. It can also reduce greenhouse gases emission by replacing fossil fuels.

As the world's population grows, so will the desire for resources. Human's demand on resources may not be reduced in a short period of time. If technology could help us make our supplies more sustainable, this could help humans in addressing the issue of resource depletion that may occur in this century. Conflict between countries over natural resources might be lessened.

2. SDG: affordable and clean energy

A floating solar power system on reservoirs and ponds can harvest renewable energy from the sun while reducing water evaporation, suppressing algae growth, saving precious land resources and increasing solar panel power production effectiveness.

In Hong Kong, floating solar power systems were installed at Shek Pik Reservoir, Plover Cove Reservoir in 2017 and at Tai Lam Chung Reservoir in 2022, for supplying electricity to the nearby facilities of the reservoir. The amount of electricity generated is equal to the annual electricity consumption of 36 average households with a reduction of 84 tonnes of CO2 emission. This technology can help Hong Kong in increasing the production of renewable energy as well as reducing carbon footprint due to energy production.

1. Technology is on one hand creating problems, but also solving problems. The challenge is to ensure that technology is used in a sustainable way that preserves our natural resources and the environment. This would help ensure technologies can save us but not killing us.

One of the key ways to achieve this is to focus on developing technologies that reduce our need for resources or directly address environmental issues. It is important to consider the impact of technology on both the environment and society before we put the new technology into use, this ensures technologies to be used in a responsible and ethical manner.

For instance, one of the reading showed that one of the six transformation to achieve the UN SDG is to ensure universal access to modern energy sources. Currently, the dominant use of fossil fuels is contributing to global warming, so it is important for us to shift towards modern renewable energy technologies. That would help save human from suffering from the consequences of global warming.

2. The recent technological development of green roofs might help Hong Kong achieve the UN's sustainability targets. Green roofs refer to growing vegetation on the roof of a building. They provide multiple ecological benefits, including reduction in the urban heat island effect, improvement in air quality, and enhancement in biodiversity. In addition, they can help reduce energy consumption by insulating buildings naturally. In Hong Kong, green roofs can be installed on both new construction and extant constructions. Therefore, Hong Kong can develop sustainable infrastructure and reduce its environmental impact by incorporating green roofs.

To promote education and gender equality, online communications platforms (i.e., zoom) introduces access to education opportunities to isolated rural households, then tertiary education accelerates adoption of new technologies with new talents.

Recent advancements in FinTech can potentially help improve financial inclusion through offering more affordable, efficient, and sustainable financial services to people of any level of income. Another benefit, start-ups by young entrepreneurs will have a more effective financial funding from investors. The current digital currency is many core foundations of technological ideas like the metaverse, these encourages advancement in various industries, encouraging industrial sustainability.

Example of recent technological development /advancement within your SDG area that might help hk achieve the UN’s sustainability targets.

The most interesting one is the AI advancements in the recent year namely ChatGPT, wide range of application fields from painting and programming are being innovated. Although this technology is still in development and needs polishing, the implications are undeniable. For example, Notco the vegan industry where the artificial intelligence can utilize its data and assemble a vegan recipe by analysing the chemical components of the meat counterpart. This corresponds to our SDG 9 where industries in the Hong Kong should be more sustainable, the citizens of Hong Kong can be further encouraged into a flexitarian diet with a higher compositions of plant-based food products, helping the domestic meat-alternative industry grow, gain more investment and formal support from the Hong Kong government.

Will technology save us?

Indeed, technology has the power to aid us in overcoming some of the most significant issues affecting modern civilization. The question of whether it will "rescue us" is complicated and dependent on a variety of variables.

On one hand, technical developments hold the potential to alleviate many of the urgent problems we face, such as poverty, disease, and climate change. In addition, improvements in medical technology may result in improved health outcomes and increased access to healthcare for individuals all over the world.

On the other hand, applying technology as a remedy also comes with significant problems. For instance, technical advancement may result in employment losses and other economic upheavals. Also, there are worries about the potential for technology to be abused, such as through cyberattacks or the distribution of misinformation.

In a nutshell, whether technology will "rescue us" depends on our ability to strike a balance between its advantages and disadvantages and to make responsible and moral use of it.

2. Recent technological development

The Internet allows women to gain knowledge earlier and increase social mobility. This can bridge the gap with men. Also they can use the Internet to search the laws that are protecting them and find help on the Internet.

Moreover, the Internet lets people get in touch with the difficulties brought by gender inequality and LGBT. This can also increase people’s acceptability of LGBT and reach the goal of gender equality.

Computerized and automated business mode also helps contribute to gender equality in the job opportunities to male and females.

For example, the computerized and automated logistics systems. Male are often said to be having a stronger body than women. This, in the past, job opportunities for warehouse keepers are only offered to male due to its heavy work. Now, robots, delivery belts and computers helps the company to do heavy work, such as transporting heavy and dangerous products. Such technology makes the job of warehouse keeper easier and hence, even women can handle it. Therefore, there more jobs of warehouse keeper opens for females now, UPS and DHL is a good example to it.

Taking urban decay as an example, it cannot be solved in a matter of days and is a bitter pill for governors as projects to redevelop a place often lead to conflicts and debates due to the disturbance to residents. However, with technology, it can speed up processes, e.g. building process where prefabrication can be done. Such method can greatly shorten the building process on site and when redevelopment takes place, it can save a lot of manpower and time. It can also minimise the nuisance caused such as displacement of residents for a prolonged period of time.

2. It improves health outcomes by providing remote medical care and advice, reducing carbon emissions. Hong Kong, a densely populated city, can particularly benefit from telemedicine as it helps underserved areas access medical care and reduces the burden on healthcare systems. According to a recent study, telemedicine can reduce outpatient visits by up to 50%, which leads to a significant reduction in carbon emissions. The responsible use of technology like telemedicine can help Hong Kong achieve its long-term sustainability goals while improving health outcomes.

Technology will save us if it is applied in the right way. Technology development in recent ages have been focusing on sustainable development of technology, which can also benefit the planet when we use technology to find new alternatives to current polluting processes to prevent environmental impact. For example, we could use technology to create organic plastics to replace current synthetic plastics, but allow our lives to continue operating in a similar, yet more sustainable way. Technology is also a mitigating factor as it is developed in the medical industry to offset the diseases that may be caused by pollution, and also invent different ways such as air cleansers to protect our health. In terms of energy, photovoltaic panels is a technological advancement that converts sunlight into electricity, producing clean and renewable energy that does not produce any air pollutants nor greenhouse gas unlike burning fossil fuel. Hence, it can save humankind as it is renewable and sustainable, since it is derived from resources that can maintain current operations without jeopardising the energy needs or the environment of the future generations.

With proper use of technology, the world can eventually achieve a sustainable future. In recent years, scientists developed many new technologies with respect to the 17 SDGs raised by UN. For example, fertilizer can now be produced using leftover by compost machines. This is extremely important to Hong Kong since Hong Kong, despite being a small city in terms of its territory, has over 10 thousand licensed restaurants, generating tons of food waste per day. Therefore, compost machines can transform these food waste into fertilizer without disposing to landfills, which can save the capacity of landfills and produce compost for domestic consumption.

Will technology save us?
In my opinion, technology can save us in different aspects. For example, advances in medical technology have led to development of life-saving treatments and cures for diseases. Moreover, technology improves communications and transportation. From carriage and rickshaw to electric vehicles, from telephone to internet, both made communication and transportation more efficient and accessible. Technology does not only improve quality of human’s life, but also has potential to solve the pressing problems. Hunger was one of the serious issues in the past, the advancement on agricultural technologies, especially the high efficiency and utilisation rate of fertiliser, alleviated hunger problems in many countries.
Example - SDG 7 ( Affordable and clean energy )
We have developed different kinds of renewable energy sources in order to produce energy in a more sustainable way. Recently, The United States National Laboratory has made a significant advancement in nuclear fusion technology by creating more energy than it took to produce it. When two light atomic nuclei combine to generate a heavier nucleus, fusion energy is created. Sun is a visible example that is powered by fusion sustainably. Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California have been working for years to use lasers to create fusion in a lab environment. The laboratory conducted the experiment that yielded the ground-breaking result. 2.05 megajoules of energy were directed toward the target, producing 3.15 megajoules of fusion energy as a result. It is the first time such a net energy gain has been achieved in fusion energy in the world.
Fusion does not produce any long-lived radioactive nuclear waste, unlike conventional nuclear power plants that use nuclear fission, in which energy is generated as atoms split apart.
Fusion is one of the most environmentally friendly energy sources because it doesn't release carbon dioxide during the process. Lithium and hydrogen, its two only fuel sources, are both easily accessible over much of the planet.
The achievement of net energy gain in fusion energy technology will be a milestone on generating clean energy for human.

Technology won't save us. Indeed, a lot of resources are needed to develop and manufacture the new technology so it is very likely to cause damage and harm to our environment. If resource consumption, population growth and technological development speed is compared, the speed of inventing new technology is far lack behind the population growth and resource consumption, the world is probably going to be exploited before world changing new technologies appear. Thus, the increasing reliance of technologies could also harm the communications. The innermost feeling across the internet could not be expressed, which will hinder the communications in long term.

However, there are some existing technology that could alleviate the problems of the poor consumption habits.

1. No, it wouldn’t. To elaborate, we could think about: “What is technology saving us from?”. Technologies are human developments that complete tasks/ produce products, it provides higher efficiency and productivity, hence giving us the conveniences that we could never have before. Yet, technologies do cause direct effects such as wars and pollution, as well as indirect impacts such as the increasing resource demand and the explosion of population. Technologies itself is a double-sided blade. Therefore, we think the key to save us is never technology. It's ourselves, human beings, that determine what technologies to use and how to use them.

2.(SDG12, sustainable consumption and production; Focused area: plastic wastes in the food and packaging sector)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanohnsman/2023/02/25/current-climate-scientists-discover-a-cheap-way-to-recycle-plastic/?sh=30aaa25a18e8

One of the challenges in sustainable plastics manufacturing is the simple fact that recycling plastic is expensive and resource-intensive. As a result, it’s often a lot cheaper to just produce single-use plastics, despite the long-term environmental risk they post. The new method, which was published in the journal Science, uses specific catalysts that enable plastics to be broken down at near room temperature, significantly lowering the cost.

1.
Technology is a double-edged sword, it can be the solution to many existing problems, but it can also become the problem itself if not used properly. Technology surely improves people’s lives in various ways. Transportation, lighting, and electronic devices, we all benefited from technology every day. However, like what is mentioned in the video, it also has become a product, as a driver in resource consumption. Although our daily lives are now much more convenient than centuries ago thanks to inventions during technological improvement, the amount of energy consumed by us has also increased a lot since nearly everything we use today needs the energy to operate. Therefore, we need to think about how to enhance energy sustainability with the help of technology. A good example of using technology to enhance energy sustainability would be the development of renewable energies such as solar energy and wind energy in recent years. In this way, technology will be able to save us by enhancing sustainable development.

2.
SDG: Clean Water and Sanitation

To strengthen the development and application of smart technologies in water quality monitoring, modelling, and data visualisation, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) established an integrated smart technology centre in 2021, namely the Smart Water Science Centre (SWSC). The SWSC is equipped with advanced computing servers and high-performance computing clusters, which allow the integration of data and information acquired from smart monitoring systems, modelling projects, and the routine monitoring program, into the SWSC’s database. An integrated Geographic Information System (GIS), a 3D data visualisation platform and thematic web applications are newly developed and connected to the database as a one-stop platform, which saves effort in extracting, compiling, and consolidating information from different data sources, and facilitates more efficient comparison and analysis of data. In addition, it also provides a holistic visualisation of the temporal and geographical water quality information based on the consolidated historical data, real-time online monitoring data, and model predictions of the future conditions of Hong Kong and its adjacent waters for planning and EIA purposes. And the enhanced monitoring of water quality can help achieve the goal of clean water and sanitation through a more accurate and integrated analysis of water quality in Hong Kong.

1. A coin has two sides, same as technology. Technology can bring both advantages and disadvantages to us in different aspects. To achieve a sustainable future, we should focus not only the benefits brought by technology, but also how to minimize the negative consequences of it. For example, improvement in medical technology has lengthen the life expectancy and well-being of us; Advancement in AI and automation have alleviated labour exploitation in LDCs; Early detection of natural disaster and climate. However, there are some potential issues have to be solved, such as global warming, climate change and limited natural resources. Therefore, it is more important to develop technology that can alleviate these problems.

2. Hong Kong has started introducing electric buses to replace buses operated with gas. Not only does this reduce the expense on gas, using electric public transport is more environmentally friendly as it produces less CO2 and other pollutants. In Hong Kong where most people travel by public transport, introducing electric public transportation can greatly benefit the air quality and reduce carbon emission in this city which in turn improve overall health of the citizens.

Hence, whether technology can save us or not is a controversial topic. However, if applied grammatically (through consideration of humanism, theory and research), it can support the world very well and therefore benefit humanity. To reach that level, there needs to be a harmonical balance between the government, countries and especially the general public (because, as individuals, we can make significant changes too) to collaborate in the right direction. The sooner this gets realised, the better we can prevent a crucial future failure caused by an unbalanced use of technology harming the environment, health, economy and lots more.

2. find an example of a recent technological development / advancement within your SDG area that might help Hong Kong achieve the UN’s sustainability targets.

Our group’s (B6) SDG is number 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. An important and quite intriguing example of a recent infrastructure facility for this area is the water-cooled systems (WCS) through sea water (water taken from the harbour). This is done by cooling towers as a method of heat disposal during chilled water production. This will satisfy one of the eight targets of SDG 6 as a sustainable energy-efficient system that will reduce carbon emission (alongside 6.3 (nm), as sea water can be used for flushing as well).

Without the help from modern technology, the productivity of basic grain will be low and it will became less possible for developed nations to support poor nations. High-tech weapons does cause more casualties at current but as the technology level at all regions became very high such as nuclear weapons, the possibility of abuse of weapon will become zero since nobody wishes to destroy the planet. The disease and death can be proved by the data of rising life expectancy and less remaining categories of unsolved serious diseases.

2.
SDG: gender equality

The consistently developing information technology industry is one of the greatest tools promoting gender equality. Not only internet as a platform provided opportunities for unequally treated people to share the current inequality and a more direct way to find help from the officials, but also absorbing more talented female workers to this industry and the let them prove that they have equal or even stronger productivity than others.
“The web was created for two reasons: to be a force for good and to be accessed by everyone, regardless of their gender,” said Nnenna Nwakanma, Chief Web Advocate at the Web Foundation. Achieving gender equality requires more people to be connected and so to solve the problems, thus the technology development is essential for this SDG.

1. There is an ongoing debate about whether technology will save humanity from the climate crisis. From one perspective, those with an anthropogenic approach believe that humanity is innovative enough to create technological solutions for the climate crisis. An example that supports this mindset is the rapid innovation of COVID-19 vaccines. On the other hand, many believe that the side effects of climate change will soon become irreversible. The ongoing struggle against PM2.5 pollution worldwide supports this belief. If technology can save us, why are we still struggling with bad air quality? If we cannot tackle issues like air quality, can we truly deal with all the adverse effects of climate change?

2. One of the technological advancements helping with clean water and sanitation is membrane distillation. It is a separation process where a micro-porous hydrophobic membrane separates two aqueous solutions using low-grade thermal energy, in which only the vapor molecules can pass through the microporous hydrophobic membrane. It could be used for the treatment of saline water and waste water with high rejection factors.

In addition, with the advancement of technology, Artificial Intelligence could be used for the analysis of real-time data which could be put in place for predictive maintenance, anticipating and preventing pipes malfunction.

1) Technology has significantly changed the world and improved the quality of life of people, from communication and transportation to healthcare and food. That is an undeniable fact. As time progresses, technological advancements will further propel us to greater conveniences and a higher standard of living. However, the demand for resources required to sustain these technologies is very high. It also affects our environment, polluting it and consuming its natural resources with no end. At the current rate, we might destroy our natural habitat to sustain and advance these technologies that govern our daily lives. If we cannot solve these issues, we might be bringing about our doom instead of saving ourselves from what's to come.

2) Virtual reality, or VR, is taking off in education with an increasing number of schools adopting the technology. VR can be great for those students with learning difficulties in Hong Kong as they can learn about the world around them in a safe and controlled environment. VR has been found to be helpful for students with autism. A study by Strickland et al. (2007) showed that children with autism could apply skills they had learnt in a virtual environment to the real world, including fire and street/road safety skills. Thus, achieving Target 4-5: Eliminate All Discrimination in Education.

Besides, VR provides realistic travel experiences. With a virtual field trip, students can feel as though they are at the location and can get a better sense of the scale and the surroundings. This could be learning about the history of a famous ancient castle and visiting a monument or the environment and visiting a nature reserve. Hence, enhancing Target 4-7: Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship.

Target 4-A: Build and Upgrade Inclusive and Safe Schools can also be achieved through VR. Having limited land and space has always been an underlying problem in Hong Kong. So, when expanding a school to build more sports grounds seems rather difficult. School authorities may consider implementing VR for students to experience different sports so that physical health is not neglected.

Especially during a pandemic, vaccine technology has allowed researchers to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus in a short period of time, reducing the death rate. However, science and technology will also destroy human beings. Taking genetic modification technology as an example, due to the complexity and relevance of each gene, even if the original intention is to get rid of some genetic diseases, the modified genes may bring potential defects to our next generation. It will even deepen a series of ethical issues such as the deathly gap and and social conflicts. Therefore technology can save us and kill us, depending on how we use it and our ability to control it. In addition, the use of technology should be carried out under norms and social consensus. If technology does not have broad social consensus or social confidence, it cannot be applied and save lives.

2. If we immediately start exclusively focusing on and researching technology which enhances sustainability, we could come up with many innovative solutions. The evolution of technology within the past 50 years has demonstrated that we have the ability and potential to build great things. Technology has saved us before in many dimensions, whether it is in medicine or architecture. Therefore, it should be used to come up with ways to enhance food production and crop growth. In today's world, many problems regarding our environment is created. For example, pollution problems, climate changes, sustainable energy etc. This is also where the current technology is focusing on developing. Therefore, technology developments can assist us in utilising the environment and save the planet. For example, large amount of waste is produced in the previous decades. This is a problem already created, and need the help of technology to solve. Countries in Europe have been making use of waste to turn into energy, which help lower the burden of landfills, but also help in developing renewable sustainable energy.

2. The new technology is waste-to-energy. So why is this applicable in HK?

There are three major sources of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong including domestic solid waste, commercial solid waste and industrial solid waste.
The amount of municipal solid waste generated each year in Hong Kong, China is enormous, given that the city houses over 7 million people and is a regional centre of commerce. In 2015 alone, 5.7 million tonnes were generated, of which 35% was recycled and the rest went to landfills.
However, the process of recycling requires a lot of energy (e.g. compressing plastics and glass etc.) Instead os wasting the energy for recycling, we want to generate energy from waste.
The specific methods are landfill gas utilization, anaerobic digestion and thermal treatment with energy recovery, which are clean energy.

How can these technology help achieve clean energy?
Not only we can save energy from recycling, but also create energy from waste that we will simply throw them to landfill, not to mention landfill will produce greenhouse gases such as methane.

Additionally, the use of technology can have negative environmental consequences, such as increased carbon emissions, water pollution, and soil contamination. While technology can be used to increase our resilience, it can also be used to increase our vulnerability, as certain technologies can be used to target vulnerable populations or to facilitate cyber attacks. Therefore, it is important to consider both the potential benefits and drawbacks of technology before using it to address our challenges.

2. AI technology could help Hong Kong improve gender equality. There has to be a balance in the extent that we use our limited resources to advance in technology, because at the same time, whole communities experienced huge disparities in opportunities. One one hand, developing countries are still addressing access to basic needs, education, health, etc, while other parts of the world focus on first-world issues. Technology must be a tool that bridges this gap and not worsen the existing gap.

The recent creation of ChatGPT has been a controversial issue worldwide.

1. Technology has undoubtedly made remarkable advancements in various aspects of our lives, from communication to healthcare, and has improved our standard of living. However, it would be naive to think that technology alone can solve all the problems that we face as a society. For example, technology alone cannot solve deep-rooted issues such as inequality and social injustice. In fact, technology has also brought about its own set of challenges. Therefore, it is important to recognize that technology can be a powerful tool, but it must be used responsibly and in conjunction with other approaches such as policy changes, cyber security concerns social and cultural shifts, and ethical considerations.

Furthermore, it is important to recognize that technology is a tool, and how it is utilized ultimately depends on us as individuals and as a society. Thus, it is up to us to ensure that we use technology in a responsible and ethical manner, with the ultimate goal of creating a better future for ourselves and future generations.

2. As an AI language model, ChatGPT can play a role in improving the quality of education in Hong Kong by providing personalized learning experiences for students. This can be achieved by using natural language processing (NLP) techniques to understand students' individual learning needs and preferences and adapting the content and delivery of educational materials accordingly.

Furthermore, ChatGPT can assist educators in creating engaging and interactive learning experiences by generating interactive quizzes, assignments, and simulations based on the students' interests and strengths. However, it is also important for us to use ChatGPT wisely and not abuse the use of it. Currently, HKU has banned the use of ChatGPT in our work and assignments so that students are not over reliant on it. Even so, it is a good technology to help in achieving quality education among university students.

1. Will technology save us..

In my opinion, the answer is both, it can both save us and destroy us.

We all know how important technology is for upcoming industries and recently been focusing on sustainable development which can benefit the earth. From technology, new alternatives can come up to have a sustainable future

For eg: the public electric transports ..they eliminate all the local particulates including SOx, NOx and CO2, all major issues from the cities today.

Moreover, there are negative impacts of the growing technology as well if people choose the easy way out. For eg: technology from depleting the natural resources could destroy the planet but if the same technology is switched to renewable energy technology, a way more sustainable future can be seen.

Technology will save us if we apply it in an appropriate context and assess its potential benefits and risks.

Technology facilitates social development and helps us achieve SDGs. Widespread internet connectivity enables people to exchange information and communicate with others, transportation development makes commuting more efficient, power generation technology ensures electricity supply, etc. For achieving SDGs, social media platforms help publicize the SDG concepts and draw people’s awareness. Technology also provides platforms for young people to collaborate to achieve SDGs. Digital technology improves resource efficiencies, support the circular economy, enable zero-carbon energy system, etc.

However, the rapidly developed technology also increases the potential of some risks. The development of AI increases the unemployment rate. The digital revolution causes threats to people's privacy. Only when we assess these pros and cons of technology and try to minimize its negative effects can technology truly save us.

2. SDG-9 industry, innovation and infrastructure.

①Nanoscale 3D printing technology which is a game changer today has enabled for precision manufacturing of biomedical and photonic devices. This technology has increased speed to 10000 times and reduced cost by 98%

Just like these there are more innovations seen in Hong Kong to have a sustainable future like cultivating fintech talents, enhancing web security etc.

② Biodegradable technology

The reason for production industry is now called a disaster for society is that almost all the products produced nowadays proceed with several complicated procedures, making them exquisite and lengthening their life span. Yet, a long life span also means that these products are difficult to degrade and decompose, accumulating in landfill sites or marine and waiting for their end of life.

Hence, to solve this problem, the company nowadays would like to seek out a way to regulate the lifespan of the products, not as long as possible, but easy and green to decompose after using it. Biodegradation is a new technology that is investing in this purpose.

For example, a Hong Kong company invested in a biodegradable mask; with the outbreak of Covid-19, the demand for masks has risen rapidly. Yet, masks are necessities, while it is produced from a mixture of materials of plastic and cotton, which are difficult to decompose, resulting in serious concern about pollution. There’s news showing that numerous abandoned masks are floating in the ocean, blocking the insolation of marine and trapping the animals.

In this case, biodegradable can highly help with this issue by degrading the mask efficiently and environmentally friendly after we use it for a day.

1.

In the future, technology would prevent a food crisis. For instance, it can improve farming and food quality. New technology allows us to improve the quality of meals and farming, whereas green revolution technologies allowed farmers to produce more food with less land. Our reliance on agrichemicals can be reduced, soil quality can be improved, and food can be made more nutrient-dense thanks to precision farming technologies and biotechnology advancements. This indicates that we may still get more out of our food system with fewer inputs while putting less stress on the natural resources of the planet.

2.

Food import in Hong Kong is necessary as we cannot produce enough to fulfill everyone, and that could cause lots of food waste due to bad storage management, especially fruits. However, by extending the shelf life of perishable goods, shelf-life extension technologies help to reduce food waste during the consuming stage. For instance, Apeel makes plant-based sprays that reduce the deteriorating process. In a trial test, avocados sprayed with Apeel had a 50% reduction in wasted fruit. Therefore, this innovation could help Hong Kong to prevent food waste more sustainably.

1. Will technology save us?
In terms of advancements, technology could bring solutions to us that no other field could. For example, today we are running out of water, and research in desalination technology would increase the amount of drinkable water and relieve the overuse of current sources. Furthermore, waste is a major issue, and the increased development of incineration facilities or waste disposal systems would offer a solution as we run out of place to stock the waste. In addition to this, certain countries are currently lacking natural resources due to political unrest, barrenness of area, or financial crises. Technological development could develop renewable energies so as to not depend on sources that can run out and reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

2. E-learning was further developed and used since the pandemic and has managed to maintain education for children who could not attend school. Through this technology, students with an electronic device are given the opportunity to access education anywhere and anytime. E-learning has since allowed more interactive material where videos can be found and online quizzes can be done. In 2022, Hong Kong University had a restriction on the number of students allowed in class. The hybrid system with online teaching gave multiple students the opportunity to attend classes even during a health crisis. With the possibility of this issue happening in the future, online teaching is a means to provide education to all in the event of a typhoon, confinement, etc.

There are 2 types of technology, one is driven towards performance, the cutting edge type of technology. The other is efficiency based, their ultimate goal is to drive down resources consumed without the compromise of our lifestyle. All the newest technologies nowaday are a mix of both of these so it will be hard to say that technology will save us or it will cause the demise of us. Take the battery industry for example , even though the strength of lithium batteries is clear as day, it also has some pretty obvious weaknesses, making it not the perfect option for every solution. Many new promising battery technology is being developed to replace that option of energy storage system. In this way technology is the one that will save us. However, the advance of technology makes people yearn for a better lifestyle where more resources will be needed to satisfy this thirst. Though to be honest we should blame the people instead of the technology

2. E-learning is a great example of how technology improves our life. Take precision farming as an example, it uses GPS and GIS technology to help farmers collect information on soil salinity , weather forecasts and help monitor the conditions of crops. It largely increases the crop yield and prevents the overuse of resources such as irrigation water and fertilizers, thus increasing the food production while at the same time reducing environmental impacts.
