Remake of KWL by Mary Lynn Doherty

Choral Clinicals - Using the KWL strategy, please post a response for each column and initial it so we know who it is from! This strategy can be used when you are introducing a new musical concept or piece or when you are teaching students about a part of the world or a group of people they may not be familiar with and/or a host of other topics.

Two Clinicals, FIVE CHOIRS?!

There are five choirs all together: ranging from 7th to 12th grade at both placements. 7th graders are far more open to trying out new things and singing out. After that, many external factors affect their participation. There are LGBTQIA+ students as well as students of color in the choirs.

Encourage and mistakes

I want to know how to encourage your students to step out of those fears that if they sing out, they'll stick out and people will think they're "less cool." How do you encourage them to make mistakes and acknowledge that it is part of their process?
Other concerns:
How do you pick repertoire? How do you begin to introduce any musical notation and make sure it is retained? I guess a fear is that yes but also I don't think I've been going at this music career for long but I somehow know how to read music and interpret this and that... therefore how do you step back into those shoes of when you were their age.

(Franco) Middle and High school Similarities/differences

The Ensembles I am watching are a middle school chorus (7-8) on tues/thurs both in person and online while I am mostly observing the Treble (mostly freshmen women. maybe sophomore women). and Chamber Choir (audition based) on wed/fri unless I have more free time, then I just go to all of them.
I have noticed that Ms. Zahora has the same teaching strategy when it comes to middle and High school choirs. This stems from playing one part and singing the other along with the choirs both in person or online. With the conversations I have had with her. It is most likely to simplify her strategy given that she has to teach like 2 to 6 people if in person and a bunch of blank screens online. She is also uber willing to let me spread my wings and fly. a proper example of this would be my arrangement of the theme from Halo.

I would like to know the makeup of the student body. On the online portion (or afternoon) nobody has a screen on but they are participating. I would like to know Ms. Zahoras method of choosing songs for choir (How much of the choosing is 100% her and how much of it is based on student input).
