the older boys would train for the war by jumping out of that tree as an act of bravery ( not scared ) and being courageous enough to over come there fears. 


the reason finny gave about why they jumped out of that tree was "because we're all getting ready for the war." They were getting ready because they are worried that the draft age would lower down to 17 year old.

In war you have to be brave and be courageous to succeed in war.
