This was such a fun activity! Not only was it fun, but I can see so many applications for this in my classroom. I am going to implement these ideas into my Narrative Writing unit that I presented (just for one example). A perfect blending of ideas as all good teaching is. Thank you so much for sharing. AMAZING, that is what you are!
Kathy

This gave me a couple of ideas about how to do this with juniors and seniors. Like, exactly the same way, just with any other text or picture we're working with. Also, I had lots of sophomores last year who still give me the "I don't know what to write" excuse when I ask them to add details, so this is something else I'd like to try. That was great! Thank you!

--Eileen

Michelle - this demo was surely just a small slice of all the wonderful ways you encourage your student writers. I saw ways to use this with my college students right away! Your focus on purpose and connection to the readers was completely in tandem with the joy that can come with bringing writing to life with detail. --Kelly

I absolutely love this! I struggle with this, to be honest. The things I have written down as the activities I currently do to help students expand their writing are, well...lame. They don't engage much with them and it does not yield the results that I am looking for...just kind of, meh...
I can't wait to use this in my class! I foresee a new dawn on my ELA horizon! Thank you so much!

Michelle, I agree that often our students feel the writing is "done," when really they are just getting started. These tools are not only fun to use in the format you taught us, but they help students see their creative potential, and dare I say, joy in writing. :) I will absolutely use this with narrative writing with my students, and I appreciate your warmth you infused in this process and presentation! Thank you. --Daina

What a great way to teach revision explicitly and with low stakes. The week's framework you outlined is a powerful way to get kids on board. They will leave this week with new tools to bring to their own, more personal writing as the year continues. I love it! It does a great job building certain revision skills from brooke's matrix in her demo. You focused on sentences, here. But you could focus in on word choice more explicitly, or rearranging inside paragraphs with the same tools you developed in your demo. This is soo cool!

Great demo, Michelle! You have broken down a complex writing skill of elaboration and description and made it so tangible and accessible for students. This was super fun and I can imagine that your students have a blast as they learn a really fabulous and useful set of revision tools. Way to make revision FUN!

I also was reminded of Kelly Gallagher's "Question Flood" revision technique when we looked back at the example sentence that we revised in groups. He has students come up with a flood of questions for a draft in a similar way. Such gold, and I'm using ALL of your demo!

-Jamie

I really appreciated going through the sequence of activities, and it got me thinking about how I could provide students with more specific scaffolding for the types of details they can add to their writing, in very different genres (I'm starting to make connections with Brooke's presentation...). I also appreciated learning about the books.

Thank you! Great work!
-Lisa
