Jem and Dill grow closer, and Scout begins to feel left out of their friendship. As a result, she starts spending much of her time with one of their neighbors: Miss Maudie Atkinson, a widow with a talent for gardening and cake baking who was a childhood friend of Atticus’s brother, Jack. She tells Scout that Boo Radley is still alive and it is her theory Boo is the victim of a harsh father (now deceased), a “foot-washing” Baptist who believed that most people are going to hell. Miss Maudie adds that Boo was always polite and friendly as a child. She says that most of the rumors about him are false, but that if he wasn’t crazy as a boy, he probably is by now.

Meanwhile, Jem and Dill plan to give a note to Boo inviting him out to get ice cream with them. They try to stick the note in a window of the Radley Place with a fishing pole, but Atticus catches them and orders them to “stop tormenting that man” with either notes or the “Boo Radley” game.

The remainder of the school year goes by depressingly for Scout, who endures a curriculum that moves too slowly and leaves her constantly frustrated in class. After school one day, Scout passes the Radley Place and spots a piece tin-foil poking out of a small hole in one of the Radley’s large oak trees. Scout reaches into the small hole and finds two pieces of chewing gum. Scout chews both pieces and tells Jem about it. He panics and makes her spit it out immediately. On the last day of school, they find two old “Indian-head” coins hidden in the same small hole where Scout found the gum and decide to keep them.

Summer comes finally, school ends. Dill comes back to Maycomb. Jem, Scout, and Dill begin their games again. One of the first things they do is roll one another inside an old tire they found. On Scout’s turn, she accidentally rolls in front of the Radley steps, Jem and Scout freak out. But, this incident gives Jem the idea for their next game, they will play “Boo Radley.” As the summer fly’s by, their game becomes more sophisticated, until they are acting out an entire Radley family play. Eventually Atticus catches them and asks if their game has anything to do with the Radleys. Jem lies, and Atticus goes back into the house. The kids doubt whether they should play their game anymore.

Atticus Finch: Maycomb attorney and state legislative representative (lawyer) who is assigned to represent Tom Robinson. Atticus is a single father with two children; Jem and Scout. Atticus is built with a strong mindset that is set fairly in doing the right justice and proving to be a great role model and guardian of his children.

Jem: Scout's older brother who slowly starts becoming a young teenager during the story. He is Scout's watchful protector and one of her best friends. As part of reaching young adulthood, Jem deals with many difficult issues throughout the story.
Jem has a different side of opinion from Atticus and Jem, He almost sits in the middle of the fence between being a responsible young man to still causing mischief with Scout as a child.

Scout: She tells the story of How to Kill a Mocking Bird. The story takes place from the time Scout is only in primary school, but she tells the story like an adult. Scout is a tomboy who would rather solve problems with her fists than with her head. Throughout the course of the book, Scout comes to a new understanding of human nature, societal expectations, and her own place in the world.

Dill: Jem and Scout's neighbourhood friend. Dill leaves and spends every summer with his aunt, Miss Rachel Haverford once a year. He just thinks like a kid and has more of a way of thinking like Scout.

Skeeter: The daughter of a wealthy white Southern family, Skeeter is bit of a misfit. Unique and strange among young women in her social circle, she is far more interested in writing for journalism than looking for marriage and family life. She becomes sixated on her idea of writing a book about the lives of coloured maids in Mississippi. She teams up with Aibileen and Minny who are both maids. She was inspired to write about this topic because of her close relationship with her family's maid Constantine, who disappeared mysteriously shortly before Skeeter came back from college. Skeeter cannot stand lies, and will often ask difficult and uncomfortable questions. She shares a part of the mindset of Atticus by persevering with trying to do good when the odds are stacked against her.

Aibileen: She is a gracious, gentle woman who earns her living from taking care of the children of white families. The most recent was the Leefolt family. She loves Mae Mobley, their two-year-old daughter. She still mourns the loss of her son, Treelore, who died in an industrial accident. It is this loss that motivates her to take part on Skeeter's project to document the lives of maids in Mississippi. Aibileen takes primary responsibility for recruiting other maids to work on the project in order to protect her friend Minny. Her mindset is positive and is constantly cool and calm under pressure especially from her boss.

Minny: She works as a maid, but frequently find herself dismissed from her cleaning jobs due to her sarcastic comments because of just her personality but has been known to take revenge on her bosses when mistreated. She has five children whom she loves deeply, but her husband is extremely violent towards her. She starts out working for Miss Walters (Hilly's mother), but when Hilly puts her in a nursing home, Minny finds herself working for Miss Celia, a kind but mysterious outsider with whom she develops a close relationship. She and Hilly are enemies because of the "Terrible Awful" thing that Minny did too Hilly. Minny stays calm most of the time but when pushed she will take revenge on those who do wrong towards her and her family.
