Example of My Real Experiences

a. A lower level business course
b. About a year and a half ago.
c. John, a sophomore who was still figuring out how to be academically successful.
d. I worked with John to develop an understanding of the value in reading the textbook. We broke down the long reading into smaller sections. I asked him to read a section silently while I did also. We stopped and I asked him to write down what the key terms were from the section as well as to write in his own words (like taking notes) what the key information was from that section. Then we talked about each. This made the complex task much simpler for John, so it didn't overwhelm his working memory.
e. It was very successful, in my opinion. He had never done more than skimmed the text for bold terms.
f. We should have continued to meet regularly so that he could develop simple cognitive schema into more complex cognitive schema. This would have also given us the opportunity to help him entrench previously learned content by opening reviews or focus questions.

Modeling- as writing tutors, we often come across times where we will show a student our work in order to give them a better idea of what their goal should be for that item.

Refrain from admitting the learner into a passive role. The student is likely to have been exposed to core concepts so reiteration of previously exposed material should be avoided. Instead, incorporate the learner into an active role that focuses on interaction
