Childhood/Adolescence between Eve and Hannah

Hannah and Eve's childhood were initially described as distant and standoffish from one another, but as I dug deeper into their past, the themes of fairytales throughout their upbringing can be argued to have greatly influenced their thought processes and decisions later in life. In the attic, the girls spent a lot of time together reading fairytale novels such as Rapunzel in the dollhouse that they both adored. The manifestation of love over a future prince to sweep each of them off of their feet was amplified by their childhood's environment. The way that people interacted with the girls not only treated them like beautiful princesses, but the dollhouse representing a tall castle in the attic attributed to their choice to romanticize the fairytale theme. As the girls grew older into pubescent teenagers, the girls started to realize that they could take advantage of their identical appearance and date the same guy that they were both into. For example, a boy named Carl from their high school was popular enough to mention in this murder case. Hannah and Eve both wanted to be sexually active and spend time with Carl, so they switch places and clothes regularly to share him. However, this ordeal with Carl awakened the first conflict between the girls. As boundaries were crossed and agreements were betrayed when setting the guidelines on dating Carl, the girls start to become more territorial in future relationships. As Carl faded out of the girls' lives, they still used used each other's identical appearance to share men until became severely complicated when they met Simon.

During a Friday night, Hannah speculated that Eve became furious after receiving the same present as her for birthday while also disagreeing with Simon on a future pregnancy. Eve's reaction to these chain of events was smashing the mirror into pieces. Hannah said Simon did hit Eve first, so Eve reacted to picking up a mirror glass shard to push him away from her. Apparently, Eve didn't mean to swing at a vital spot on Simon's neck, but it proved to be lethal. "Her story was that she’d waited for him to come back. She put on my wig, some of my clothes. Pretended to be me. They talked. She’s enjoyed being me. He said he wanted to be with me. then he took out a present. another mirror. Just like the one he’d given her earlier. that unique present. she went crazy. smashed the mirror. they argued. screamed, he hit her. so she grabbed a piece of the mirror, just swung it round. she cut his throat clean open. she only meant to scare him off" (Hannah).

Glasgow alibi

Hannah reported that Simon did not come home like he usually did on the day of his murder. Hannah knew something wasn't right, but decided to go sleep after her long work day. Simon's boss Eric called Hannah's house phone twice to ask about his whereabouts due to his absence at work. After speaking to Eric, Hannah decided to drive to Glasgow to find Simon at his business conference held in that region. Hannah's fatigue due to lack of sleep and worry for Simon's disappearance led to her rear-ending a taxi. The taxi driver found out that Hannah was pregnant and wanted to check her into a nearby hospital. "When I arrived in Glasgow. I was exhausted. The streets were empty. I was driving badly and hit a taxi… not a big crash, just the paintwork. When I told him I was pregnant, he made sure to take me to the hospital to check me out… The hospital must have details when I was looked at. There’s a scratch on the car" (Hannah). Hannah's story from her house, phone calls from Eric, trip to Glasgow, incident with the taxi driver, and the hospital records had solidified her alibi.

love life with Simon

Hannah and Eve both fell in love with Simon. Initially the sisters agreed upon the standard method of sharing a man while swapping places with one another periodically. However, Simon was idolized by the girls to point of actually wanting to settle down with him and raising a family. The sisters tried to set equal amount of time on dates with Simon, but Eve betrayed the agreement and had sex with him. Hannah was so smitten with Simon. She started getting jealous and didn’t want to share… I let him kiss me, but that was it. "After that was Hannah’s turn and she slept with him. Broke the rules. Deliberately broke the rules. She wanted to be the first to sleep with him… that’s when she got pregnant from that one time" (Eve). The love triangle became more complicated between the three of them. Over time, it can speculated that Simon eventually found out that his girlfriend was actually two twin sisters. It is unclear and unconfirmed that Simon was rendezvousing with one of the sisters during his 'business trips' in Oxford. Simon's potential affair with the other sister or another woman named Helen may have happened during these trips. This undermined affair definitely worried and stressed the sisters while fueling the jealousy, trust, and rapport between everyone involved. During the interview process with the police on the murder case, both sisters claim to be married to Simon and carrying or carried a baby with him. The potential love affairs may have contributed to the motive for the murderer to want to kill Simon. The tense relationship between the sisters that existed prior to the knowledge of the potential affair heightened the extreme jealousy of the sisters to the point of Hannah admitting that she wanted to kill her at some points. "We fought on the beach once and I held Eve’s head underwater. There was no one else around, it was at the far end of the beach, and [Hannah] held her head under, and I kept it under. And for a moment I just wanted to kill her and watch her drown. But that was it. It was just for a moment. We made up afterwards. It was a love hate relationship" (Hannah).

During the interview, Eve admitted to having a miscarriage at 8 months with Simon. Toward the end of Simon's life, Eve confronted Simon about a new baby and wanted to make plans for their future family. As mentioned prior, Simon and Eve did not agree on the whether keeping or raising the child. "It was a shock to [Simon], I mean we never thought it was possible…. I hadn’t decided whether to keep the baby. I wasn’t ready to talk to him about it" (Eve). Additionally, Eve found out about the possible pregnancy of her sister Hannah. The disagreement with Simon on the child and the possible affair with Hannah attributed to the motive for Eve to murder Simon.

Throughout the interview process both Eve and Hannah are shown to deny being related and identical twins with one another. Hannah was recorded saying, "Are you out of your mind? Twins?" when the officer asked to clarify about the relationship with Eve. Each sister is shown to be using their similar appearance to take advantage of their alibi or expressing their stories and ideologies with the police interrogator. Eve is also shown withholding details of her story with Simon's whereabouts and the relationships between Simon, Hannah, and herself. For instance, Eve admitted that she lied during the lie detector test of the interrogation by stating, "my name? That was the only question I failed. Your lie detector works" (Eve).

I believe that Eve murdered Simon because she was jealous that her twin sister Hannah was not only favored more by Simon later in her marriage, but also furious that Hannah had the desire and intention of trying to settle down with Simon with a baby on the way. The "if I can't him, then no else can" trope comes into play when Eve decided to murder Simon. The birthday present of a mirror was the murder used on Simon's throat. The love affair and possible divorce was the motive of Eve carrying out the murder. Prior to the murder, Eve lost control of her emotions and made the rash decision of striking Simon with a glass shard from the mirror present that she received. Receiving the same present as her sister, not coming to the same terms on a future baby, and the jealousy of possible affairs pushed Eve to commit the murder.
