The novel I read was 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, which is in the genre of realistic fiction. In the book, a girl named Hannah Baker commits suicide and she leaves 13 tapes listing the reasons she decided to kill herself. The storyline follows a boy who was in love with her and finds his name on the tapes. As he visits the spots she leaves for him, he realizes the Hannah he knew was really suffering and the way people treated her. I would rank this book as 5 stars because of the impact it has on people's realities.

I would definitely recommend this novel to other readers. This story had an incredible personal impact on me and really thought me a few lessons. One being, you never know what's going on in someone's life. So before you judge someone or treat them poorly, know what they're going through. You shouldn't treat people poorly at all but you should be a friend to people that need someone to be there for them. No one though Hannah Baker would ever commit suicide because they didn't know what was really going on in her life. I would definitely recommend this book to other people because I think Jay Asher has included a few very essential lessons in his novel.

Emma Giordano's book review talks about how she doesn't necessarily agree with ruining 13 people's lives because they ruined yours, but she does agree with the fact that treating people poorly without knowing really anything about them is something that should not happen. She enjoyed the book but does not necessarily think that it captures the essence of teen suicide. She talks about how everyone handles depression differently and how no one has the right to judge someone on how depressed they really are. She says that she understands why other readers may think that the book is controversial and glamorizes suicide but she disagrees. She says that every persons story is different and that even though the author may have made things more dramatic for entertainment purposes, teen suicide is a serious issue and happens over things that took place in the book.

I agree with this person's book review and I think that she summarized the book and the key points very well. I think that the book is a very realistic point of view i'm a teenager's perspective which is a lot different than how she described the book. However, I did learn something new from the book review that I did not piece together on my own. At the end of the novel, the author describes Clay running after a girl that he grew up with in middle school named Skyler. The author describes how she became invisible in high school and started changing her appearance. The writer of the book review made a point that Clay suspected her of being suicidal which is why he chased after her which I did not understand until reading it.

The universal theme of the novel 13 reasons why is stealing. " A rumor based on a kiss ruined a memory that I hoped would be special. A rumor based on a kiss started a reputation that people believed in and reacted to." ( Asher, 119) The characters in this book stole something from Hannah which caused her to take her own life. They stole her reputation, things that she cared about, as well as her privacy and emotions towards others. The universal theme of this novel is stealing and is incredibly important in our world today.

People should be able to learn from this novel that stealing things from people is not okay. " I’m listening to someone give up. Someone I knew. Someone I liked. I’m listening. But still, I’m too late." (Asher, 78) In the novel, the things that the other characters stole from Hannah ruined her life and caused her to commit suicide. Some people do not understand the impact that little things like that could have on a person. The universal theme of stealing is a very important concept that people should understand and realize that it is not acceptable to steal things from people because you have no idea how it will a affect them.

The main character in this novel is a boy who was in love with Hannah and it follows how her decisions impacted him. " I cost a girl her life because I was too afraid to love her." (Asher, 214) Clay is an extremely shy person who always had feelings for Hannah but never knew how to show her. Clay affects the story due to the fact that he was so close to Hannah and had feelings for her and in some part of the story was more than friends. It affects the story because he knew her better than a lot of people and was even more hurt by her decision.

Because Clay was so close to Hannah, we see that he was more motivated to find out why Hannah did what she did. " I let the rock drop into the sidewalk. It was either that or smash it into his face right there. My fingers close and tighten into a fist. I look down at the rock, aching to pick it back up." (Asher, 110) He wanted to fight on Hannah's behalf and make the other kids who were responsible for her death feel a sense of responsibility for their actions. Since Clay is so shy, the audience sees how much he really cared about Hannah by the amount of times he went out of his comfort zone to stick up for her.

I truly cannot relate to what Clay was going through because I have never lost a friend who is very close to me. Clay loved Hannah and I cannot imagine what it would feel like to receive those tapes knowing that you were part of the reason she committed suicide. Emotionally, Clay completely fell apart and blamed himself for what happened. I cannot relate to Clay in this aspect because I have never felt guilty on the same level that he must have. Clay had to deal with something I've never had to you and I hope I never will have to.
