At the start of term two, the business cohort started attending timetabled photography classes. In these classes we analysed the work of other photographers, tested out various pieces of equipment and became familiar with the essential terminology:

Aperture: Opening in a lens through which light passes.

Exposure: Amount of light reaching the camera sensor.

ISO: Sensitivity of the camera sensor to light.

Depth of Field: Range of distance in focus in an image.

Shutter Speed: Duration of time camera's shutter remains open.

Flash: Producing artificial light for photography.

Lighting & Colour: Illumination and hues in photography.

Types of Photography: Various genres or categories of photographic work such as street photography, journalism, landscape etc.

Digital Photo Processing: Editing and manipulation of digital images in digital software such as Adobe Lightroom.

Music Journalism: Analysing photos of music-related events and topics.

From these lectures, I have learnt the fundamentals of basic photography and become well-versed in adapting to various live music scenarios.

Practicing At The WaterBear Venue

The live music performance lectures at the WaterBear Venue gave us frequent opportunities to practice taking photos of musicians. We were able to get a feel for what its like to be a photographer in a live setting and really see what our cameras were capable of capturing. The shots displayed on this page were all captured with a Canon EOS 1300D that I have borrowed over the last four months.

The business cohort and I took some professional press/headshots for future business use with our cameras. I'm thinking of using this one for my Spotify artist page when i release some music next year.

EVIKTED AUDIO: NOISE COMPLAINT - 16/3/24

I attended an EDM rave as a photographer for a new events promoter,Evikted Audio. The crowd was live and in the mix from 11pm until 3am with B2B DJ sets of Jungle, DnB and UK Garage throughout the night. Access to the green room and the stage behind the decks let me get a diverse mix of shots from within and above the crowd.

I found that using flash was the best course of action to counter the low light in the WaterBear Venue. After the event, I processed the best shots I got in PhotoScape and sent them to the promoters in a google drive.

Playing With Grayscale

Grayscale in photography refers to a range of grey shades that are used in a monochrome display or printout (Visual Flow, 2024).

Grayscale can make images feel more vintage and raw. From a live music standpoint, it works very well to accentuate the emotion of a genre like heavy rock or in this case grunge.

Adjusting To Light - Live Lunch @ WaterBear HQ 22/3/24

Over the course of my photography lectures, I have been regularly tested on mini quizzes that require me to think about photography as less of an art form and more of a science. For example, If I am in a low light venue, do I need my ISO higher or lower? Or, If I set my shutter speed on a faster setting, will I get more light or less light in my shot? Being tested on questions like these has allowed me to think on my feet in a live photography setting and helped me get the best out of my shots prior to editing them.
