My parents divorced when I was about 15, leaving my mom to raise me and my brother. We both are close to my moms side of the family which is spread throughout Houston and Galveston. Everyone in my mom's family and my dad's can speak Spanish except for me and my brother....which we are always reminded of by our aunts. I don't know if its part of the Mexican lifestyle but growing up and I see it more so now, is that the women keep the family inline and bring them together. I knew the Marines or Army wasn't for me, I'm a horrible shot, and the Navy didn't interest me. The Coast Guard was perfect, it's a small service that not many people new about, plus they were offering a sign on bonus. I chose the MK rate (Machinery Technician) , which is diesel mechanic, because I wanted to know how do fix an engine.
