And depending on the suffix, speakers can indicate whether a noun is toward or away from them; uphill or downhill; or upstream or downstream. It’s a much more precise way of dealing with the world than English. “There’s a misconception that these languages are simple just because many are unwritten,” Turin says. “But most have incredibly complex grammatical systems that far exceed that of English.”
