Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet has a wildly beautiful and chaotic style. The editing is full of idiosyncratic, colourful energy which drives the story. moments like when Romeo takes drugs are beautifully captured through the editing; he takes the drug, a quick cut is made to a close-up of his eye which then transitions to a firework. this firework both symbolising the drug's effect and the beginning of a new scene.

With quick cuts and sudden close-ups, so much goes on for the viewer as the action takes place. we are drawn to each little moments and aided with the Shakespearean language. Luhrmann is known for such a unique style however, the editing job in this film is particularly stylistic as we are pushed along each moments with tension and explosive ideas being shoved into our experience.

The Hateful Eight
Directed by Quentin Tarantino

Edited by Fred Raskin

A western movie with a murder-mystery plot set in post civil war Wyoming during the winter, focusing on 8 characters who end up being holed up in cabin (or Haberdashery) together during a blizzard.

Tarantino had this film shot in Ultra 70mm Panavision & he really shows it off during the first 5% of the film. The wide shots of the outdoor landscape scenes transitioning with the horses & carriage (if not intentional) is very reminiscent of the opening sequences from the classic western movies. If you’ve seen the film, you know that the remaining 95% is pretty much set indoors & this is where I think the editing really stands out.

Each scene is strategically placed & it almost becomes an immersive experience because you end up getting a view from each of the characters perspectives as the tension grows among the group. Even when there’s a discussion happening among a couple of the characters, we get a few cuts to the others not involved in the discussion just to get an idea of what's happening within the cabin & it keeps us guessing as what will occur next.

In a nutshell, everything was coherent when it came to the editing, I didn’t feel like any of the scenes were random or out of place, the seamless transition from actor to dummy when the character is shot in the head still blows my mind (no pun intended) because there wasn't anything to distract us from the impact like a flash & lastly, things like the slow motion scenes were done with a purpose i.e. the reaction times when drawing & shooting their guns & it’s a good example of not having to rely on anything but clever editing.

The Hitman's Bodyguard analysis

Throughout the film ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’, the editing remains at a consistently high standard. Many of the funniest moments in this film strongly rely on the power of editing for comedic effect; both this, and symbolic irony, are two things which the film does with great excellence. A scene to note: discussing the poor smell of his car, Michael Bryce’s (Ryan Reynolds) dialogue reads, “we’re gonna take it out back, and we’re just gonna burn it” – scene cuts to shot of burning car in separate scene. Attention to detail such as this helps the storyline move smoothly. Many shots centre focus a person in the frame, and slowly pan out or in, which in its simplicity, is done well. Another feature of this film is the use of overlaying conversations between characters after they have left the frame; not sure why this is so appealing to myself, but it is. In addition, all slow-motion shots utilise incredible detail, and even something as simple as keys falling out of a pocket are in clear view.

Devins- A french film about a girl leaving her dreary life going to an assistant school to join a drug gang. This movie has a great story line and characters for one but the way it brings you along Douina's journey is an absolute thrill. the shots are so beautiful and you live her dream with her. we see the struggle between her love of family and friends and her desire for wealth and luxury. there is comedy and the heart strings are tugged on as we see the depth of her relationships. there is a fun scene i especially love where she imagines she's on a Ferrari in Thailand and the camera put us in a position and makes movements creating a feel as if she's truely driving a car. this is a serious movie but the filmmaking has clearly been a lot of fun and with many classic French experimentation along with it.

The Father- Constantly throughout this movie you are confused as the audience are put in the shoes of a man with dementia. personally i've never completely understood dementia and it wasn't until this movie that fact was clear. I even know someone who ended up watching it to gain understanding of their dad's current experience facing dementia. the whole movie is set in a few days... or is it? in two locations... or is it? with 3..4..6 different people? So many questions and so many moments flipped on their side as what we thought to be true clearly isn't. so much detail has been put into this film. the set design is marvellous with slight changes of the same room in each scene as we question if he is in his apartment or moved in with his daughter. I am truely inspired about how such a complex film has worked so magically. the editing, acting, directing, camera work is all spectacular.

In the Zookeeper's wife, the First scene is quite uplifting with the soft piano playing. the sound really compliments the visuals with the shallow depth of field and slow movements. You can hear bells ringing and natural sounds of animals and people talking cheerfully. This is all real life sounds. even the sound of a lion rawing is of a nice tone due to the beautiful happy orchestral music. there are many characters present, so much is happening but all so calmly.
The climax of the movie also uses orchestral sounds however, it is less calm and more tense creating fear. it only occurs occasionally and sometimes stops to enhance the tension, you can hear what the guard can hear hoping he wont notice the child hiding. we hear birds screeching rather than tweeting. it's more wind instruments than string and it is still accompanied by sounds we really are hearing in that moment including the loud, rapid action the guard makes. there is little speaking till the end where there is instance yelling and talking and a loud gunshot. after the gunshot the sound changes along with the mood to enhance relief however sill a somber feel as the music is slow and uncertain.

The quality of the editing really comes through in respects to the building of intimate tension between the two main characters and love interests Ellio and Oliver. The editing also massively contributes to the overall 'dreamlike,' aesthetic of the film.

My 'dream' music video would most likely consist of the old-style video cam effect. I think that brings such levels of warmth and nostalgia to any piece. Warm lighting (sun rise/set?), with a lots of pastels to give it a touch of vintage would definitely appear within, which would aid in telling some sort of 'coming of age' storyline.

The Fundamentals of Caring –

This movie is inspiring on two parts. The first, being obviously the story of these two characters, that highlights the incredible work that carers do, and what life can be like for those with physical disabilities on a day basis. The second inspiring part about this story is the way in which is it put together; essentially, this is quite a simple story line, but never at any point does the film feel dull. It keeps the level of emotion and humour consistent.

Bombshell –

Essentially, standing up for what’s right regardless of the personal consequences is at the heart of this movie. It is an inspiring film based on real events, brought together through considered editing and shot choices that place the audience inside the action, and make you feel every part of the anger, sadness, and frustration of the characters.

Just Mercy –

This biopic is incredibly inspiring that never fails to make me cry no matter how many times I watch it. The film paints the devastating reality of those who have been falsely convicted to death row. A sense of awe is felt throughout the film’s duration, and it’s additionally inspirational from a filmmaker perspective to capture an audience’s emotions from start to finish, by doing a true story such as this justice.

Taylor Swift's "The Man" is a massive commentary on the treatment of women in such a patriarchal society. she has clearly had her fair share of male abuse and this song was included in her most political album yet as she finally feels unafraid to speak her mind. It is quite a comedic peice where she dresses as a man and acts as she finds many men are able to act. We only find till later it's her dressed as a man and she is also the director of this music video which is inside the music video. The editing has been very cleverly used to portray this as we see not only his 'man's' lavish life but also the effects his self-righteousness has on others. It's a dreamlike piece which quickly highlights the downsides of the character towards the end. The music video is an interesting and humorous story with much meaning and impact along side the song.

Alicia Key's no one is a beautiful heart felt video made to compliment her singing and the emotional impact. The editing sticks with the beats e.g. at the beginning it fades to black with the beat as we get closer to her to sing. Between beats it always switches from a more comfortably dressed Alicia to more glamorous. it flashes between different scenes telling this story of what her life is like but still this emotion carrying through no matter what. It is a video encompassing her singing performance.

My dream music video is definitely one this has an overarching story but playing around with the many more stylised ways available to emphasise a particular thought that cannot be done in film. Id want it to be humorous and a massive element of play. As an actor the performance would be a massive aspect but also the art and a more abstract way of showcasing it. Defiantly something that still sticks to the song strongly and what is it saying in that moment. I think Taylor Swifts music videos are always my favourites, they're so creative and fun.

Early Scene (Watching loss)
The music in this scene is very eery, encapsulated by a single droning cello, in order to capture the risk involved with Billy's (Brad Pitt) managerial choices which seem as if they have not paid off. There is narration occurring during this scene of commentators chastising the team. There's the sound effect of the cheering crowd of the opposing team who won the game convincingly. The scene presents the audience with the character of billy, disappointingly viewing his team on the club house TV who are all themselves in a state of despondancy.

Climax Scene (Team Win World Series)
This scene is an exact inverted version of the aforementioned scene. The same characters are watching the game, the exact same cello, commentators and the exact same sound effect of the crowd cheering. However it is all reversed. The crowd and commentators are cheering for the protagonist's team and the cello is playing a more uplifting tone to imply a great release when the game is won.

Duke Dumont - Won't Look Back
The editing in this music video is quite standard. It cuts to a different angle/shot on every second beat which is pretty predictable. However I found the visual aspect of the video to be the more interesting part. The greyed out colours and comical tone in conjunction with the notion of a robbery/bank heist help to maintain a light-hearted spectical.

Thundercat - Funny Thing
Thundercats music video is all about nostalgia which is captured by the clip being itself a 'blast from the past' 1970/80s stock discotecha footage. The cuts are a bit out of place as they arent at all assistive of the song however they slow zoom ins and zoom outs do give it the retro feel that the 2020 song attempts to bring to life.

Dream Music Video
My ideal music video would have range of comedic elements to it, juxtaposed with serious elements. This is primarily due to my love for uplifting 'happy' tracks. Have an appropriately Choreographed music video would be a priority as it must remain subtle yet professional, otherwise it borderlines on a dance instruction video.

Rufus du sol - No Place

Being one of my favourite artists I feel I had to include one of their music videos in this weeks entry. Their "No place"music video is more for storytelling however also has visual aspects in place. The seemingly endless cracked desert landscape compared to the blissfulness of the sunset on the beach portrays some of the visual themes that the listener's imagination may travel to when listening to the song. As the lyrics also suggest the video is aimed to show the subjects travelling between places which are more serene and desirable. Lots of match cuts on action https://youtu.be/-ge8lQfig9Y

Bicep - Glue

Very different concept to no place as this focuses on the storytelling of the artists life through the years. Mainly focused on his ecstasy experience throughout his younger days which is embraced with a montage of relative clips along with text on screen which is him relating back to what it was like. Quick jump cuts are seen and sudden flashbacks are also exposed which portray his disarray in a club setting. I really enjoy this kind of video style. Haven't seen many use.

https://youtu.be/A7ZxRs45tTg

Ideal Music Video:

My ideal music video I guess would definitely include a lighting rig such as the one seen in Marting garrix's music video "ocean". I love that style of lighting. It's also incorporate some storytelling aspect to it like the one in Bicep's "Glue". A mix of atmospheric effects and a variety of numerous landscapes would be really cool.

Film Audio Analysis

I watched the Avatar lately. It was a really good movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it, definitely recommend. In terms of the audio in the film I made a few points on how it aided the scene and enhanced/complimented the storytelling. Around the start of the film there's a scene where Jake and 2 of the others land in the forest as Avatars for the first time. The sound of the helicopter blades whooshing , wind whistling and music is extremely prominent and in your face however as soon as they jump off that helicopter and step into the unknown all the sound is cut and you only hear quiet animal noises and rustling. This really added to the suspense and the sense of the unknown to that scene.

There were also a noticeable amount of chase scenes throughout and the music complimented each one. The music would rise, slow down, pitch up and down as per the action in the scene and really added to the film. Sound effects were very crisp and harsh synth stabs and big orchestral drums would surround you. In comparison to that the scenes that were aimed to pull at your heartstrings such as scenese like the forest being ripped down included much more mellow synths soft pads and tribal horns, flutes and other instruments. This would then pickup as we saw the Avatars fighting back and really flowed well in conjunction to what we were seeing. The instruments used also accompanied the taste and feel of the film.

I also noticed that the audio would sometimes give hints as to what was going to occur in the next shot. For example a sharp riser would be heard before we saw the next shot of a certain dangerous animal.

I recently rewatched the first John Wick and found out that Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir was the editor. She had also edited another movie I really enjoyed which was Deadpool 2. Both these movies are very action heavy and I noticed they were filled with similar techniques such as match cut on action and slow motion effects. In saying this I do feel as though her editing style in John Wick has been focused much more on displaying emotion where as in Deadpool 2 she's aimed to really bring out that comic/action feel by using a range of techniques such as discontinuity to bring out the humour in the story. In these 2 examples especially I think you can tell it's the same editors work.

It's not a movie but a tv series i recently watches and am obsessed with: Haunting of Hill House. It's a 10 episode horror series and Flynn edited 4 of the episodes. Flynn has also edited Bridgerton and my sister's keeper. I've seen both these, i defiantly feel that although it's clear that Flynn strongly took on the directors personal style there is something mystical that he has effectively brought with his editing. these are very insightful and highly emotional movies. I believe Flynn's effectiveness in editing comes from his ability to capture the desired emotions and tension

'Tenet' Editor - Jennifer Lame

Lame's editing across her work creates suspense, eerie silence, or like in Tenet, compliments the musicality of the action on screen. Additionally, she worked notably as Editor on 'Marriage Story', 'Hereditary', 'Manchester by the Sea', 'Paper Towns', and worked in the editing department on 'Midsommer' and '30 Rock'. Out of these I have seen only seen Hereditary, and being a horror film at first glace there doesn't seem to be many similarities between the two. However, Lame's timing for shot changes (whether long keeping on characters to see their emotional response, or quick cuts to create tension) across the two to profoundly translate the story. Evidently, her work has made quite the impression on audiences, and Christopher Nolan's choice to hire her for his film was a considered and well judged one. On Tenet, to quote the editor, she "began to think of action as also driving the story forward, explaining, and fleshing out the character’s journey". Christopher Nolan films are of course distinct in their own right, but Lame's editing with a focus on rhythm and emotion, adds an extra layer of intensity to the already action-packed film.

The Dark Knight - Convoy Scene [Homework] Editing Style

During the convoy scene, the composition is particularly unique due to the extremely fast back and forth camera cuts. After we see the convoy shot in an aerial view, the camera soon cuts to a shot of the police officers who look literally squashed like sardines, the shot then changes to Harvey Dent by himself in the back of the police van. The camera and shots are also extremely shakey which makes the indvidual watching it feel a sense of uneasiness.

If you combine these editing techniques with the quick unexpected turn of the convoy into a dark tunnel, it sets a very particiualr mood in which the audience feels a sense of claustrophobia and entering the fear of the unknown. In the next scene, when we see Batman emerge from the batmobile for the first time, the camera movements and editing style do a complete 180 as there is lttle to no confusion or sense of the unknown. In the sequence prior, there were so many different cuts and this made it hard to tell what was going to unfold next, however when Batman arrived the cuts are more in control and the camera is extremely focused, giving a completely different vibe in the matter of minutes. The mis-en-scene is truly magnificient throughout the entire film, and that is why I believe the dark knight's editing style is powerful as it provokes particiular thoughts and emotions to the individual viewing it.

Three films that inspire me and why. [100-200 Words]

My upmost first choice would definetly have to be Martin Sorcesses's 2009 Shutter Island. This is due to the film's magnificent use of atmosphere, it's complex cinematography and powerful storytelling. Personally, I believe this film has one of the best plot-twists I've ever expierenced, I literally had no idea that the film would end the way it would. Everything visually is beautfiul, the use of powerful editing combined with great acting made the movie enjoyable multiple times. I've always been inspired by this film and find it to be one of a kind.

Another film that takes the cake would have to be Gaspar Noe's Enter The Void. This film is so bizzare, and its honestly difficult to put it into words. This Science Fiction depiction of the afterlife is a confronting yet beautful cinematic expiernece which I highly recommend. The films use of edting in conjunction with the trippy soundtrack calls for an emotional, psychadelic like visual expierence.

Lastly, I would like to mention Roman Polanski's 2002 The Pianist. This film is honestly a masterpiece in multiple ways. This work of art is an autobiographcial film portraying the life of Wladyslaw Szpillman, a Polish Pianist of Jewish Descent trying to survive durng the German occupation of Poland. The film's sense of realism is incredibly emotional, along with the acting we see from Adrian Brody. The Pianist is a beautiful movie which taps into your feelings, you can't help but appreciating the effort and time that went into the film after seeing it. The editing helps tell a powerful story, the design, the colours and the soundtrack is all so fitting and creates such a powerful atmosphere throughout the film.

This week I watched Hot Fuzz, an action comedy which follows two police officers that uncover a variety of gruesome murders in a small country town. One of the first things that I noticed was it's quick pace cutting. There were multiple times where the camera would cut from one shot to another in fast succession almost at a stressful pace. I feel as though this portrayed the chaotic life of the police officer as he seemed to always be flat out with work. The editing in this also really brings out the visual comedy as ordinary things suddenly become really over the top. In terms of the sound there are times where the audio changes drastically with the picture and just enhances the whole emotion of it all that little bit more. This video is a good example of it: https://youtu.be/e8dFK5nI1YA

We are your friends

This movie definitely inpired me when I was younger as I was an aspiring DJ when this came out in 2015 just like the main character "Cole" is. It's quite a simplistic and hollywood style story however I could relate to it in its ways. I remember after seeing it the first time I immediately hopped onto my laptop and tried to write a song as the movie gave me some inspiration. Cheesy I know

Scent of a woman

Another movie which moved me was Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino. I watched this quite a while back but I still remember it having an impact on me and being up there with some of my favourite movies. I think the whole concept and storyline of it was really well done.

Lucy

This movie really grabbed my attention when it first came out. The thought of humans only using 10 or so percent of their brains was really interesting. All though not true I really enjoyed how the story portrayed what would happen if we reached full potential. I guess this movie inspired me in terms of its film making techniques such as all the graphic detail seen throughout and its action scenes.

It's defiantly effective in presenting the 'brand' of Taylor Swift. Were brought into this other world of Taylor and that she has created

Alicia Keys No one
This video, like Taylor's is super on brand for Alicia. It's a lot more about her voice and self than a story. We see her contrasts as a glamorous singer and one at home a lot more casual.

My ideal music video would be similar to Taylor swifts in that it's like a story. i feel her music videos are always marvellous and so much fun. it's great to play with what the music does to you and put that into a visual form to enhance it. making a music video, i would take advantage of being able to play around with it a lot more than you can a film.

The videos were amazing to watch. What defiantly amused me was the sound of stomach digestion as the T-Rex 'rawed'. The first two videos really captured the range of sound that must be used for a living animal. they had a strong emphasis on soul and by mixing the animals together they were very effective in giving each dinosaur a voice. They recorded weird sounds of a range of animals and mixed the high and low frequencies to form the dinosaurs raws.
Jurassic Parc's theme song is a renowned song full of so much mystical, tension, grandiose, life. They included this song this song in Jurassic world and rerecorded it. I think this was a great idea and defiantly necessary it is part of the backbone of who the film is. they chose a perfect moment for it to be played and re recorded it with so much passion and admiration.

Three Movies that inspire me

My number one favourite film has to be "Snatch". Although the nature of the plot doesn't necessarily inspire me, it is the characters themselves that do so. I in no way aspire to be a gangster, but the way in which characters such as "Bricktop" carry themselves is truely something to marvel at. He knows when to joke and when to maintain a stern hold on the situation.

The same notion of subverting a relatively grim culture is present in the film "Boogie Nights". Honestly this entire film does a fantastic job of presenting the highs and lows of the pornography industry with a juxtaposing score. The Early stages of the film are laden with disco music and bright lighting. however as the film progresses, the music becomes more absent. This film inspires me in a way that is quite hidden throughout the plot. The notion that humility is the key factor of an individuals character.

My third favourite film that inspires me has to be "Green Book". Honestly i love the way in which Viggo Mortensen's character 'Tony Lip' is portrayed in such a manner that the audience would immediately self determine as a narrow minded man. However throughout the film we learn that the character has little to no prejudice towards his client, renowned pianist Don Shirley, played by 'Moonlight's' Mahershala Ali. in fact the opposite occurs as Shirley is taken aback by Tony's "lower class" ways. Although they struggle with their conflicting morals and ethics, the film finds itself a comfortable conclusion which in itself inspires me to respect the old adage, "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover"

As a fan of Almost all of Guy Ritchie's films, "Snatch" was a standout. It shared similar editing techniques to his other British Gangster Films such as "Rock 'n' Rolla" and his classic "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels". However upon further inspection, the editor of "Snatch" had not edited any other Guy Ritchie Films. His more notable work includes "127 hours" and "T2 Trainspotting". Although the latter shares a similar setting and scenery to most of guy Ritchies films, it seems as if the actual flare in "Snatch" was mainly the directors doing as neither "127 hours" or "T2 Trainspotting" share much or any similarity to "Snatch".

The Jurassic Series use of Sound Design

Jurassic park's sound design was made with the intent to be realistic, but the struggle was to make these non-existent beings feel alive to the audience without any reference. Jurassic park’s sound design crew did look into the history of dinosaurs with scientists, but the real sounds that the scientists described felt unenergetic and lost the sense of tension with these creatures. The sound design crew looked into gaining sounds off real life animals, such as lions, elephants, monkeys, whales and more. The collection of these sounds led to them combining the sounds into a coherent vocal for the dinos. The way these sounds lead into a coherent vocal is due to the sound patterns with each dinosaur. For example the T-rex, everytime a T-rex is close but off screen the sound of the sonic booms is played, showing audibly that a T-rex is around these characters. The breathing is heard when T-rex is viewed giving a haunting presence, followed with combination of animal sounds of growling. These patterns give each dinosaur an identity in audio.

The same can be said with Jurassic World and the way they use the past movies' sound design. Since each dinosaur within the series already had an audio identity, the sound crew wanted to continue with these sounds but bring new life and feeling with them, showing that these are new bigger, more exciting dinosaurs. Providing a sense of nostalgia with each dinosaur that appear in the last movies, but providing a new enticing experience along with it.

I really enjoyed these videos as they broke down and explained the multiple layers of sound that went into the different dinosaurs along with discussing the movies score and other sound effects. The various animal noises they used and cleverly put together made it very easy to believe it could've come from the real thing. I liked the point one of the scientists made, expressing the fact that they wouldnt have actually roared but instead chirped like a bird with the addition of a stomach growl. The response to that was "well its a movie". This really just proved that so many things we hear in movies aren't real as the ted talk backed up aswell.

The technique of layering the frequencies heard throughout the roars was really cleverly thought out and definitely aided in bringing the dinosaurs to life. The low end and sub frequencies mixed with the higher end screeches gave the dinosaurs that added volume and sense of danger.

Layers upon layers: The process involved representing key aspects of the sound of the T-Rex (eg. his breathing, footsteps, and roar) by utilising six very different audio sources, then finally mixing them once the dinosaur is revealed. This builds tension in each layer as something new and frightening is being heard with every new aspect. The same process was involved with the velociraptor, however, eight sources of sound were used instead, and although equally starts slow, is mixed a lot quicker than the T-Rex.

Planning around the sound: Spielberg used sound to his advantage to create several minutes of tension within the audience, because they knew that something was coming from hearing the layers of sound from the T-Rex off screen. This finally all comes together finally once it is visible, thus amplifying the experience. Using layers of

The screams: To amplify the screams of both heT-rex and the Velociraptor, low and high-frequency elements were combined for a uniquely terrifying vocal.

Paying homage: In Jurassic World, the sounds of the dinosaurs are kept relatively the same to honour the story of the original movies. This also keeps continuity, considering they didn't revamp the entire narrative to something new, including scrapping original audio; rather reworking it to create familiarity for the audience.

The was something about the transitions between each of the characted which really drew me into the film from the start.

The pace and movement of each shot and the way that an object is moved through the scene to the next I found to be an inventive way to cover the cuts in the footage, to the point that i didnt notice them.

It helps that the script is hilarious and the twists are brilliant in keeping the audience hooked as to what is going on.

Lucky Number Slevin - Directed by Paul McGuigan, Edited by Andrew Hulme - Sound/Audio Analysis

So there's a lot to unpack in this film. the opening scene I've used begins at approximately 10min 50 secs when the horse race begins. We see the horse racing in slow motion and the commotion of the hooves and crowd begin to be heard along with the race commentary. All of this building to amplify the excitement. Only for the horse which the character had bet on to fall before finishing the race and the plot thickens. This is being narrated by Bruce Willis. At this point the music begins, it is a slow symphonic piece that builds to a dramatic crescendo as the opening plot unfold to its own climax ending abruptly when another character exclaims "fuck. shit. Jesus.". Ending at 15min 00sec.

Later at approximately 1 hour 18 mins. The Climax begins with high pitched strings and then just the crackling of fire while Sir Ben Kingsley begins his speech. The scene is primarily a dialogue between Kingsley and Morgan Freemans characters which the audiences are aware of the tension between the two. There is a small moment when the string instruments come back to break the silence and emphasis the tension. However, when Josh Hartnett's character begins his dramatic monologue, the music changes from string to a more modern electronic backing track, starting with synths and a recap of events. Interestingly there's a ticking 'beat' to the track, which could be an indicator of time running out for the two mob bosses. It begins slow and has a pensive reflective mood as it cuts back to the mob bosses remembering the key events that shaped the story. As it progresses, the music changes back to symphonic high pitched strings building to a crescendo again ending with low tonal strings. But as the final revenge of the protagonist is enacted there is silence other than the duct tape. The last part has slow mournful strings as he takes out the last guy involved in the story and the two mob bosses asphyxiate. Interestingly the film was nominated for Best Sound Editing for Music in a Feature Film and Best Sound Editing for Sound Effects and Foley in a Foreign Film.

Two Music Videos

Schism by Tool - Directed by Adam Jones

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM62wjLrgmA

This clip contains abstract visual imagery created through stop motion, 3D animation, and Actors in special effects make-up. The video has a number of interpretations but overall it has a psychedelic feel and contains themes like the alchemical concept commonly known as 'squaring the circle', male and female interacting at a sub-human level, symbols of purification of the human mind and body and the union of opposites.

Before I Forget By Slipknot - directed by Tony Petrossian
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw2LU1yS7aw

This is quite the opposite. It is a typical metal video where there are multiple shots each of the band members playing their instruments. Interestingly, it features the band members in casual clothing rather than their usual jumpsuits and face mask. The audience gets to see glimpses of band members faces and eyes yet it still holds to their ethos of anonymity by not completely revealing their identities and showing their masks hanging by their sides or on their instruments. I feel like the choice to partially reveal themselves was a way to rebuttle the media's vilification of the band and to humanise the band members. The lines "I'm smeared across the page, and doused in gasoline. I wear you like a stain, yet I'm the one who's obscene" and the chorus "I am a world before I am a man. I was a creature before I could stand. I will remember before I forget. Before I forget that" I believe are clear indication that they band wanted to remind people that they are just people and that their music is just artisitic expression rather than what the media was portraying them as.

Three movies that inspire me and why

The three movies that inspire me are Naked Lunch’, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Big Lebowski. The reason behind me licking these movies is due to the worlds they create. Naked lunch explores a surreal world explored by drowning in insanity journalist who sees typewriters as bugs. The same follows with fear and loathing but with far less insanity, a journalist who explores a crumbling generation and the heart of the American dream, riding the high to see what this American dream really is. Finally Big Lebowski, an exploration of noir films put in a silly format, a character who does nothing but participates in everything. All films have a star character who is interesting and stumbles around cluelessly every corner.

IDLES- War: The video for War by Idles tells a story of four characters’ everyday lives by focusing largely on images of their hands. With this unique camera angle, the director wanted to explore human interaction and human expressionism through a human body part we don’t really focus on. The editing within the video seamlessly cuts from one character to another, even showing combining the videos to make a combined shot. The editing shows the living community in underground England and how each of them is living different paths of life.

Slow Thai- MAZZA: MAZZA meaning madness, explores the two characters seemingly trapped with this closes spaced hotel room, causing carnage. The editing shows the character hallucinations with people deformed and unexplainable things happening. The seamless transition back and fourth from the two rooms shows the characters connected in some way.

Right in the beginning, each edit has a point the Agents talking to police separate the two, making the Agents seem bigger than them. The use of slow-motion brings the audience into action. The use of match on action exaggerates each set piece in all its glory. The color grading of green make the world seem cyber, with green relating to hacking.
