The towns people generally respect Atticus because he is seen as a fair and honest man. "Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets."

Calpurnia is the Finch's maid. She is not generally respected by people outside of the house because she is African American, however, Atticus and the kids like her. Calpurnia took over the mother figure in the Finch house which helps Atticus a lot especially because she likes to help teach the children, Scout and Jem, life lessons, such as to be kind to those who are less fortunate than them. "Calpurnia always won, mainly because Atticus always took her side."

Atticus was very well educated and went to college. Then he became a lawyer instead of staying on Finch's Landing and farming. " Yet that tradition of living on the land remained unbroken, until well into the twentieth century, when my father, Atticus Finch, went to Montgomery to read law."

Atticus does not go to church. This challenges some characters empathy because during this time everyone went to church. For someone to not go to church is extremely frowned upon. The people of Maycomb may not understand the reasoning behind Atticus not going to church.
