One must realize that equality is not inherent, rather it has to be earned and fought for. The outcome of fighting for what one believes in may not always be just, as we see in Rosa Parks case. Parks was sent to jail; her skin color made her unequal to the White people of society. The Brock Turner rape case is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of inequality in the legal system. I am still in shock that a man who violated an unconscious woman's body got a mere three months of jail time. This situation is not only about sexual assault and the degradation and objectification of women, but it touches on white supremacy, bias, and racism. Even in this picture of Brock Turner that was released to the media, a professional picture of him smiling in a nice suit, it is clear to see that if he were a black man he would have been treated and viewed very differently. I am disturbed that our society blames victims of sexual assault and normalizes male sexual violence and I find it to be one inequality that needs to be addressed immediately starting with Brock Turner.
