Harriet Tubman was born into slavery yet fought for freedom
her entire life. She escaped from bondage in 1849 yet made about 13 additional trips back to rescue 70 enslaved people. She also provided specific instructions to 50-60 others who used them to escape north. She was nicknamed Moses on account of her efforts but did not stop there. John Brown was martyred for freedom. He was charged with treason and executed on December 2, 1859. His crime? Attempting to arm enslaved people and start a revolution. He believed that violence was necessary to end American slavery since decades of peaceful efforts were unsuccessful. While his efforts failed, his courage and morality is obvious.
