Allow them to go in with support, sit through a morning meeting, interact with gen ed peers and be seen! most of our kids get stared at due to lack of knowledge.

Join us! Come in once in awhile and be apart of our sped family! Let us (the teachers) know that you support us and love us..and not just in an email or a titan up weekly update. Being new, I didn't feel that and it was taxing on my job as a teacher. Special ed isn't scary, we are from that. We love to have fun and interact with our admin but when we feel like we're being judged or assessed.. it makes it hard to do our jobs.

Celebrate our students and their accomplishments in the moment. I'm not asking to have my students recognized in front of the school or be celebrated school wide- but to be celebrated right then and there in the moment. One instance in particular, a student came up to you and requested that his shoe be tied and you responded with "I don't tie shoes." That was one of his IEP goals, to request anything that he needed help with. This particular instance was the first time he did that- which was HUGE for him. Anytime our D/HH or even ASD students use any sort of language- given their huge delays- it is a huge stride for them and should be over celebrated- especially with an unfamiliar adult.

Professional Learning Days

I believe general ed teachers get professional learning days where they can plan together or work on any work that needs to be completed. SPED has endless paperwork and it would be helpful to have built in days to work at school rather than taking all our work home (daily) and working 4 to 5 hours after we've worked all day.

Ms. Tack is a great administrative head for SPED team , even though she had only one grade level charge, she was struggling hard to get things together as SPED team has to deal lot of sensitive issues in terms of student's behavior, parents concern, due process etc..etc... I am really wondering how the things are going to be on next year as she is the administrative head of another grade level !

As we know Ms. Steven is taking care of lot of things and I am truly respect and admiration about her spirit. I know you are taking care of every thing in very professional manner! However, The way you speak, the way you look, the way you handle make things little different, Talk to staff by looking at their face, That is the one thing lacking as a great leader!

Access to the ONE who has the answers....

We desperately need Ms. Tack to be available to us more, not less than this past year. She is the one who can contact proper people at the county, she is the one who has the information that we need when we have exhausted our resources, she is the one who knows who to call for answers that are outside of this building. I could go on and on. We have legal and ethical issues that require timely answers and sometimes immediate responses and I am worried that we won't be able to get that if she is also needed as a grade level AP. It would be great to have more integration of our students into the general education setting through field trips and other activities. It would be amazing if grade level leaders would consider our school age classes as just another class on their grade level. I would like for our team to take some leadership to read books about special needs to gen ed classrooms and maybe to help educate staff about various disabilities that are represented in our building.

Our school has a very high population of special education students, teachers, and support staff. It is crucial that we have more access to our special education AP, and I feel that will not be possible if we don't have an administrator exclusively serving special education.
