The weather on the day of the murder is mentioned several times in chapter 1.
Go back through and look for the different references to the state of the weather. Give the page number and the reference.
Attempt to explain the nature of the reference.
Explain why you think the narrator/Marquez does this.

"Many people coincided in recalling that it was a radiant morning with a sea breeze coming in through the banana groves" pg 4. This is one of many references to weather made by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Marquez uses these references to create a mood in the story that assists in putting the reader in the story. If you tell someone what's going on without telling them what the weather's like then it's just a story. When the weather is "funereal", then it's immersion. Using that word, funereal, also works as a sort of foreshadowing. It isn't really because we already know that Santiago is going to die, but it works in the same ironic way.

As said, Santiago had a dream grove where it was always a beautiful day, but the weather being funereal exhibits a mood change. The weather indicates the knowledge of Santiago going to be killed and his dream world being what he knows, which is nothing bad is going to happen. I think Marquez uses weather to foreshadow knowledge of Santiago’s death because it creates a well sense of mood change without it happening right away.

When Margot thought it was Christmas weather, she was unaware of the plan to kill Santiago. She saw the day as Christmas morning because everyone was excited for the bishops arrival, which was a present. It shows the contrast for what many people saw it as, gloomy.

I also believe he was trying to say that this day overall seemed pretty normal . The only thing that wasn't so normal compaired to most days is the priest was coming. Other than that specific factor everything else seemed pretty normal. Usually when the weather is good, good things happen but as you noticed the closed it got to his death the more the weather changed to how the death was going to occur.

Pg4. "But most agreed that the weather was funereal, with a cloudy, low sky and the thick smell of still waters". The quote emphasizes the sense of change. There is something peculiar about the weather because it seems funereal. The weather foreshadows Santiago's death from the phrase "smell of thick water". In reference to a river the water never stops unless something happens just like life. Therefore still waters represents the ending of life foreshadowing Santiagos death.
