And just like Scythe Volta, he despised himself for it.

Page 374

After the death of Scythe Faraday, both Citra and Rowan get sent to different Scythes. Citra goes with Scythe Curie and Rowan with Goddard. Scythe Goddard is one of the most evil Scythes, since he sees gleaning as a fun job and a hobby. Rowan knows this from the beginning, but also knows that he will become like him, and that is what he is afraid of.

The quote I chose happens a few weeks before the Conclave, where Citra or Rowan will get the Scythe ring. Rowan has been around eight months with Goddard, performing all types of murders and learning over a thousand types of gleaning styles. After one of his lessons, where he has to kill people, he says the quote. Here is where he comes to realize that he enjoys gleaning like Goddard does, and knows it is not okay. He is ashamed of it.

I think this is kind of a turning point in the novel, where Rowan knows he is doing the wrong thing and enjoying it, but still knows it is not correct and is ashamed of it, which indicates he still has a part of humanity in him. This is the point where he has to decide if he wants to continue enjoy it although doing the wrong thing or stop it and betray his master. By doing that, he would save the Scythedom and also Citra, because he wouldn't become a Scythe, therefore not having to kill her.

In this review they explain how the author addresses a lot of questions that humans nowadays ask ourselves. What is it like to not die and be alive forever? I didn't think about all this stuff while I was reading the book, but now after reading the review it all kind of makes sense. It is mostly Scythe Faraday who addresses these issues. The review also makes you see the big difference between Faraday and Goddard, explain how Faraday calculates and studies each of his deaths and makes them the least painless, while Goddard just does it for fun and doesn't care about the victims.

There is a second book coming out soon called Thunderhead, which is the "cloud" where humans keep all the knowledge in the world. The Thunderhead cannot intervene with Scythe actions.

FUN FACT

A scythe is a tool that could be used for killing, and the cover of the book shows a Scythe with a scythe, although there is no reference in the book of Scythes using scythes as a gleaning weapon.
