Residential Schools were terrible places for Indigenous youth which led to them being traumatized later in life.

Arguments:
- Health/Death/Disease: the children were malnourished/underfed which subjected them to Spanish influenza and tuberculosis. Indigenous children, such as Chanie Wenjack, ran away from his residential school and died due to hunger and exposure from the wilderness.
- Abuse: Children were not only physically abused, but some of the workers there were sexual predators which lead to the children being sexually abused as well.
- Assimilation: children were beaten or punished for using their native tongue, boys had their long hair cut short. We were trying to convert Indigenous youth so that they could later be part of our society, and not theirs. Weren't able to participate in their family traditions or speak to family members due to lack of their culture.

One big main part about Residential schools was that they were funded by the government and were typically Christian, or were very religious. Here is an example of young boys, kneeling and praying on their beds, before bedtime.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f1/cd/ca/f1cdca243fdc6524236bc2db8e9fb7da.jpg

Another big thing about residential schools that relates to assimilation is the fact that when new boys arrived, they would cut their long hair to make it short, taking away a part of their identity. It didn't happen so much with girls, but it happened a lot with the males.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j1_crf2UxVQ/VqfqYO5qIwI/AAAAAAAABqg/QH7_dVIlOBo/s1600/SUGARFALLS_P19%2B620%2Bx%2B349-thumb-620x349-167826.jpg

Many of the children who attended residential schools faced abuse. Not only physical abuse, but sexual abuse as well due to some of the workers there being sexual predators.

It wasn't just psychical abuse, it was mental and emotional abuse as well. For example, the cutting of their hair. It can be viewed more as mental abuse or maybe emotional, because some cultures - like First Nations - value longer hair, and by having cut off, it's like having a piece of them being ripped away.

For some residential schools, mainly in the beginning, students did half days. Half of the day was spent on studies, and the rest was forced labour. Despite the fact that many of the schools abolished this afterwards, it was clear that is was a problem due to unsafe working conditions, etc.. This photo shows two girls, one is washing windows, while the other is holding her by a rope. The small caption in the corner says, 'Four storeys up and terrified.'

This girl has to wash windows, and her life literally is in the hands of another student. She has to place her trust in a fellow peer and hope that she does not drop her. If she were to fall, that would be highly traumatizing for the one responsible for holding her up, because she might feel responsible for her death.

Since the closing of residential schools, Canada has apologized profoundly for what it did to our Indigenous youth. An example of this would be Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip, who created and Album and dedicated it to Chanie Wenjack. He also started the Chanie Wenjack fund which focuses on creating a new relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Residential Schools are a big part of Canada's past, and it's a very dark part. These places traumatized Indigenous youth, and were horrible places to be. Children lost siblings, family lost children, and when they finally returned home, they would feel isolated from their families because they couldn't participate in traditions or communicate with them. This might cause them to have drug or alcohol addictions because they don't know how to cope with loosing a part of them at such a young age. Let's hope we never have to see anything like this again in our future.
