         <title>Absolute Value</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Absolute value is the distance from 0, also referred to as the origin. Absolute value needs to be found when you see a number, positive or negative, in between two lines ( |#| ). Absolute value is always positive.<br><br>EXAMPLES:<br><br>|-3| = 3<br>The absolute value of -3 is positive 3. This is because -3 is 3 places from 0.<br><br>|285| = 285<br>The absolute value of 285 is 285. This is because 285 is 285 places from 0.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Adding and Subtracting Integers</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>  When adding integers, the expression can be solved by adding or subtracting. In an addition expression with numbers that are the same sign (2 positives or 2 negatives), just add the numbers together and keep the sign (positive or negative). In an addition expression with two numbers that have different signs (1 positive 1 negative) , solve by subtracting the two numbers by each other and keep the sign of the greatest number in the expression.<br>  <br><br>   When subtracting integers, the rule “keep, change, opposite” is used. In a subtraction expression; the first number stays the same, the operation is CHANGED from subtraction to addition, and the second number is flipped (negative to positive or positive to negative). After “Keep, Change, Oposite” the problem can be solved using the rules of addition with integers.<br><br>EXAMPLES:<br><br>-19 + 12 = -7<br>This is an addition problem with numbers that have two different signs. I subtracted 19 and 12 to get 7, I then made the answer a negative number because the negative team (-19) has more players Than the positive team (12).<br><br>-52 - (-24) = -28<br>    |   |<br>    |   |<br>    \/  \/<br>-52 + (+24)<br>In order to solve this subtraction problem, I used Keep, Change, Opposite. I KEPT the first number, CHANGED the operation, and made the second number the OPPOSITE sign.</div>]]></description>

Once you figure out the expression that represents the word problem, the problem can be solved.<br><br>EXAMPLES:<br><br>PROBLEM: In Ontario it is -2 degrees outside. In Massachusetts it is 24 degrees outside. What is the difference between the temperature in Ontario and the temperature in Massachusetts?<br><br>EQUATION:  24 - (-2) = 26<br><br><br>PROBLEM: There are 6 kayaks that are 4 feet and 1 kayak that is 3 feet. If all the kayaks were to be lined up from tip to tip, how long would the line of kayaks be?<br><br>EQUATION: (6X4)+(1X3)= 27 feet</div>]]></description>

Distance is how far something travels, rate is how far something travels in a certain amount of time, and time is how long it takes for something to travel a certain distance. In a word problem, 2 of the variables will be given but the third one needs to be found. When R and T are given, they need to be multiplied to find D. If D and R or T are given, then D is divided by R or T to find the third variable.<br><br>EXAMPLES:<br><br>PROBLEM:<br>D= 500 miles  T= 5 hr<br>500/5=100 R=100<br><br>PROBLEM:<br>R= 37 mph T= 3 hr<br>37x3=111 D= 111 miles</div>]]></description>
