For sure an effective tutor is an active listener, because in general listening is an exchanging of many things ( ideas, thoughts,...,etc). From my own experience, when I give the tutee a chance to talk I can know her better, it gives me a brief idea about who am I going to help and guide.
As a future math teacher I need to take care of this point!
Here is a website with good tips of How to Listen More Than You Talk.
Being Patient

In my opinion, having patience may be one of the most important characteristics of an effective tutor. Mostly because teaching someone a subject takes time, but most of the time there isn't enough time. Being calm and patient with the tutee will help them feel more hopeful, and less stressed, therefore it would make it a bit easier for them to tackle the subject. When I tutor at the Reading Center, I usually tell students to read slowly, and note the difference in how much information you can understand when you slow your reading pace.

I feel that another key characteristic is empathy - not to be confused with sympathy. If I can get it to work, I'll add a short video clip that also touches on active listening + communication. We will talk about the stages of the tutoring session in our next workshop. The need for empathy will occur throughout these steps.

The tutor ought to empower and be in help to all students to endeavor to be as well as can be expected, arrive at their objectives, to perceive their qualities, concentrate on figuring out how to realize so they will be much fruitful later.

In connection with the previous point. A non-judgmental tutor would be more attractive to students rather than judging the student's understanding based on assumptions. The tutor should comprehend what it resembles to be a student who may need certainty, feel focused, be overpowered and more confident students.

Finally, after establishing good values between the students. The tutor can clarify material in various manners; understand that not all students get it ideas a similar way and the first run through; can detect when students don't comprehend and eagerly attempts another methodology of showing the material.

From my experience as a writing tutor, the best session with a student is one lead by them. In most cases, a little guidance and encouragement is all the tutee needs, thus I always provide some tips then listen to how they choose to explore them. I believe a tutor should guide not dictate, because at the end of the day the paper should reflect the students voice and perspective, if my help alters that in any way then its counteractive.

As someone who had struggled in learning physics throughout her academic career, I can attest to the fact that knowledge alone is not a definitive measure of a tutor’s effectiveness in teaching. I believe that the harder the material is for the student to grasp, it is that much more important for the tutor to remain humble and be understanding of a student’s lack of comprehension. I am speaking from personal experience when I say, that shaming a student for not knowing something is a surefire way of breaking down their confidence in the subject. My academic career had been so fraught with demotivating teachers that I was eventually led to the decision to quit studying physics. I had myself convinced that I just wasn’t “made” for the subject. That no matter how much I exerted myself, I would still fail. I wish I could say that I’ve grown out of this mindset, that I’ve met another tutor who had rekindled my passion for the subject. Unfortunately, all that I can say now, is that having someone who believes in you could, and usually does, make all the difference.

Base on the session which we are going to tutoring, it should be prepared well and cover more solving questions. In term to try to built her confidence and lead her to get used to self-studies.In connection with the previous idea, the tutor should not bring personal emotion or judge them to do or not to do. GIVE suggestion and try to figure out what are the better solutions.
I've helped one student previously, she did not come to learn or solve the problems instead of telling tutor to complete the assignment, whenever the tutor should be more responsible and try their best to lead students to realize the aim rather than helping them with their homework。

Every thing between both tutor and tutee is about communication.
Either teaching, guiding, advising and doing practice all involves communication.
But what matters most is not what the tutor say but how he says it.
An effective tutor has to be able to convey effectively his message to the tutee , must know what to say and how to say it when the tutee has failed in order not to offend him or discourage.
The tutor must also know how to praise the tutee when does well in order to make sure that the tutee doesn’t fell it’s worth enough but feel that keeping to work hard will always improve the performance.
Therefore it is very important if a tutor is a good communicator , the tutee will effectively learn and fell courageous.
