While the book and article have similar info, I'll do my best to compare and contrast. Temperament as described by both texts is something that involves individual differences in behavioral styles, emotions, and characteristic ways of responding. This basically means that temperament is the overall average mood and behaviors, by measure of emotions and how strongly they are present, how long they last, and how quickly emotions can come on and go.

Temperament can be observed by parents and the parents can use that to tailor their skills to meet the needs of their child. Having a good routine that matches the temperament of the child will result in good fits with the environment and "good rearing". Basically, you wouldn't want to raise a difficult kid in a fast paced growing environment.

Temperament in children has been divided into 3 different types.Easy children, difficult children and slow to warm up children. An easy child is usually in a positive mood, quickly gets on regular routines, and adapt to new experiences. Difficult children react negatively and cry frequently. Harder to get on routines and is hard to accept change. Slow to warm up children are low relatively in activity, somewhat negative and a slightly less intense mood.
