Over the past years, restrictions on religions have increased in many countries, have decreased in a few, but have remained the same for the majority. Around 2.2 billion people live in countries where restrictions on religion have risen. These actions are characterised by either or, government restrictions and social hostilities aimed at a specific faith or religions.

There are organizations, such as Open Doors' World Watch Research, that focus on monitoring religious persecutions around the world, examining the pressure that is placed on the people of a faith and the plain violence that is committed against them. They collect data through analyzing reports of incidents as well as through questionnaires and surveys, which get examined by external experts. Some factors such as frequency, intensity, as well as patterns are analyzed. Questions cover areas such as Private, Family, Community, National, and Church life, and assess physical violence too.

The brutal dictatorship in North Korea not only persecutes religious beliefs but arrests, tortures, imprisons, people of different religious beliefs. Faith is strictly forbidden, and Shamans and Christians are the two most persecuted groups in the country. The government's hostile actions and enforcements make it practically impossible for these groups to practice their faith, unless they face very severe consequences. Their ability to sustain themselves is therefore, enormously limited. The North Korean government still continues its policies of persecution, despite international concern.
