         <description><![CDATA[<div>“Ainsley, Ainsley!” Ainsley’s teacher called as she sat up from a deep sleep. The desk she was sleeping on was sticky with sweat, for her dream was scary and tortuous. </div><div>“If you continue to sleep in my class, you will earn a call to your mother-- again! Now sit up and pay attention!” Mrs. Michelle told her loudly, obviously angry, from across the room. </div><div>Still in half-dream mode, Ainsley hazily said, “Okay, okay, mom, I’ll get up.”</div><div>She was awakened fully by the sound of heavy laughter and a yell from her teacher.</div><div>“Outside, NOW!” She boomed. </div><div>As Ainsley got up from her desk, she closed her eyes to yawn and tripped over a classmate’s bag.</div><div>“STOP PLAYING GAMES AND GET OUT HERE!” Mrs. Michelle yelled from outside the door.</div><div>Once outside the room, she met her teacher who had an annoyed  look on her face. She sported a fake smile to relax the concerned looking teacher that passed, seemingly putting the teacher at ease. </div><div>“Now, listen here, little missy” She hissed, at almost a whisper, “you are going to stop playing games and stop sleeping in my class. After you learn how to do that, you will be moved to a non-optional class and learn how to do basic math facts that you have missed by day dreaming and sleeping in this class.”</div><div>Ainsley  felt a tear form on her waterline. As it dripped down her cheek and onto her uncomfortable collared shirt, she managed to say through sobs, “Yes ma’am, it won't happen again.”</div><div>Mrs. Michelle motioned inside the classroom and they walked in together just as the bell rang. The <em>lunch</em> bell rang. Lunch was the most glorious part of a fifth grader's day. Sit with your friends and talk as loud as you want, even sleep. For a whole hour. The kids scattered, first to the back of the classroom towards their cubbies and then towards the front and formed a straight line in front of the door. </div><div>“Aiden, as the line leader you must count everyone to make sure we have everyone. We should have 13 because Sophia is downstairs planning something special for you guys.” Said Mrs. Michelle with a smile on her face. </div><div>As the class of happy 5th graders walked down to the lunchroom, Ainsley noticed that the classes on either side of them were spreading to let them pass. They walked like royalty to the lunchroom, they saw Sophia standing in front of the lunch room door, smiling from ear to ear. As they walked past Sophia, high-fiving her, and into the lunch room, they saw a huge display of sweets, cake, candy, and Aiden’s mom's delicious brownies. They all ran around the room with plates in their hands picking up any and all food they wanted. By the time Ainsley got to the brownies there were four left, she wanted two. But, she looked up and there, staring at the brownies, was Liam.</div><div>“Give me them, now” Liam said, as he shoved three in his mouth.</div><div>If there was one left, and Ainsley wants one, are there enough?</div><div><strong>This could be answered using simple math facts, but you already know those. </strong> </div><div><strong>Anything times one is itself.</strong></div><div><strong>For example, 1x8=8</strong></div><div><strong>In this case, the fact will be 1x1=1</strong></div><div><strong>So, Ainsley ate 1 brownie.</strong></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Johnny wanted to buy a toy train for his brother, Tim. </div><div>“Tim,” He asked, “what color train do you want?”</div><div>“Red!” Said Tim.</div><div>So little Johnny went to the store with his allowance in hand. He had 3 five dollar bills. </div><div>(Making the equation <strong><em>3x5=?)</em></strong></div><div>But, when he got to the store, they didn't have any red trains left.</div><div>“Hmmm…” Johnny thought, “I know he’ll want something red, but he might really want a train! Should I get him the red car or the blue train?”</div><div>He didn’t know what to do until he noticed the price tags. The car said $19.00 and the train said $13.00. The only problem was, he didn't know how much money he had. He tried counting on his fingers, but he quickly lost count. </div><div>If Johnny knew how to multiply, he would have been able to easily find out how much money he had to spend.</div><div><strong>He could do:</strong></div><div><strong>5+5+5=15 or 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=15</strong></div><div><strong>Or he could much more easily have done:</strong></div><div><strong>3x5=?</strong></div><div><strong>Can Tommy buy the car or the train?          <description><![CDATA[<div>Mr. Larcity turned down the radio as he pulled up to the window. </div><div>“Alien Nuggets and a Mars Coke?” said the man in the window.</div><div>“That’s me!” Said Larry Larcity as he grabbed the meal from the man's tentacles.</div><div>“$8.48 is your total.”</div><div>Larry looked into his wallet and pulled out two $4 bills and handed it to the cashier. </div><div>“Sir, that's not enough.”</div><div>“What do you mean? 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=... I actually don't know.”  </div><div>“Well sir, why don’t you use multiplication?”</div><div>“I never learned them in grade school. All we did in the 3rd grade was learning the Joustinkioyan-poteury language.” </div><div>“Well, in this situation, you could use the equation <strong>4x2=?</strong> Because you have <strong>2 four dollar bills.”</strong></div><div>Mr. Larcity held up four tentacles on the right side of his body and for tentacles on the left side of his body and counted.</div><div>“1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8! I understand! <strong>4x2 is just like 4+4=8!”</strong></div><div>“Good! Now hand me those bills and get out two 24 paso coins.”</div><div>“Because 2x24=48!! Here you go, kind sir!          <description><![CDATA[<div>“Wow!” said Sarina, gazing at the sunset, “I truly love looking at the solar patterns of our planet. Don’t you, mom?” Sarina waited and heard no answer. She turned around to see that the only person in the room was her baby brother, Alexander, who was laying on the floor with a toy in his mouth. </div><div>“Hm,” She said to Alexander. “Where did mom go?” </div><div>Alex squealed as the toy fell from his mouth and bounced on the floor.</div><div>She decided to sit down and watch t.v. while she waited for her mom to come back from where ever she had gone. </div><div>After 20 minutes there was no sign of her mom. </div><div>Finally, she heard a rustling coming from behind the couch in which she was sitting on. Sarina froze.  </div><div>“Hello?” She cried, her heart pounding in fear. </div><div>	She swooped down and grabbed her baby brother, who was still calmly sitting on the floor, to safety in her arms, and covered them in a blanket.</div><div>	Suddenly she heard whispers and a loud noise that brought multiple people into her sight and all at once they yelled “Surprise!!!”</div><div>	Sarina squealed in terror and joy. Just then, her mom came in with a large cake that read “Happy Birthday, Sarina!!” with her friends following behind singing “Happy Birthday”. </div><div>	Later, Sarinas dad cut the cake and brought out the ice cream.          <description><![CDATA[<div>One day Emma and Jackson were walking on a path in central park. They were entering Central Cafe as Emma turned to Jackson and said, “How much money do you have?” </div><div>Now, Jackson, coming from a wealthy family, said, “Nine 5 dollar bills in my pocket, four 5 dollar bills in my wallet.”</div><div>“So,” Said Emma, “That gives us…” SHe thought for a second before responding. “Sixty-five dollars.”</div><div>“How did you know that?!” responded Jackson, surprised and eager to figure out how Emma had done that so quickly.</div><div>“Well, you said you had nine 5 dollar bills, right?”</div><div>“Yes.”</div><div>“That would give us <strong>9x5. </strong>Then, you said you have four 5 dollar bills right?”</div><div>“Yes.”</div><div>“So, you then also have <strong>4x5. </strong>Then, you add those two to get the final amount of money you have.”</div><div>“So <strong>9x5+4x5</strong> right?”</div><div>“Yep! You got it! Now count by fives on your fingers. Count by fives nine times.”</div><div>“5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45! <strong>9x5=45</strong>!”</div><div>“Now what is four times fi-”</div><div>“5,10,15,20! <strong>4x5=20!</strong> Now add those and we get <strong>9x5+4x5=65</strong>!”</div><div>“Yay!
