1. Hispanic Americans have faced many challenges in the fight for civil rights. They experienced school segregation, unequal treatment under the law, low wages, and unsafe working conditions. For example, in the case Mendez v. Westminster, Hispanic children were denied access to better schools because of their race. Farm workers, led by Cesar Chavez, also struggled with poor conditions and unfair pay.

Board of Education.LULAC is the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the U.S.The Delano Grape Strike lasted five years and brought national attention to farm workers' rights.The Voting Rights Act was expanded in 1975 to include bilingual ballots for Spanish speakers.Cesar Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Dolores Huerta.

   3.Civil rights are the rights every person has to be treated equally and fairly by the law and in society. They protect people from discrimination based on things like race, gender, or religion. In a democracy, civil rights make sure everyone has a voice and the freedom to live safely.

3. Why Civil Rights Matter
   Civil rights are rules that protect people from being treated unfairly because of their race or culture. They're important because in a democracy, everyone should have equal opportunities like voting, jobs, and education. Without these rights, life would be much harder for Hispanic Americans and other minority groups.

1. In the past, gay marriage, the right to health care, and the right to exist. Modern day, still gay marriage, still the right to exist, and gender affirming care.

3. Civil rights are rights a person has because of where they live, or because they live. They are important because if people don't have rights to certain things, they can be controlled and influenced, then its not a democracy.

4. They give us perspective on what people were fighting for in the past, and how those may or may not have been achieved today. This allows us to see what we should be fighting for today, and how best to do it.

1. Pride month is in June to commemorate the stonewall riots.

2. MLK Jr.’s protest organizer was a gay man

3. The fight for queer rights picked up after WWII when gay and straight people needed to work together

4. Harvey Milk was the first gay elected official in California, and his assassination inspire the Stonewall riots

5. Kathy Cozachenko was the first gay elected official in the United States as a whole.

Civil rights are the rights of the people. Civil rights are important in a democracy because a true democracy gives power to the people to shape their country.

Learning about the Civil Rights Movement can help us understand current civil rights movements because a lot of the issues are similar or the same as past issues.

2. One thing I learned was about the Longest Walk; a protest walk from California to D.C. Another thing I learned was that a lot of the protesting started at Alcatraz. Another thing I learned was that key people such as Dennis Banks helped all of this work together. Finally, I learned how Native Americans contributed as a whole to the Civil Rights Movement.

3. Civil rights are your abilities to be who you want to be. It is the freedom of speech, press, and assembly. Civil rights are your unalienable rights. Every person should have these in order to feel like they are important to society.

4. Learning about the Civil Rights Movement can help us understand how civil rights changed over time. It helps us learn why people protested. It also helps us learn about important parts of our history. Finally, it helps our nation learn from past mistakes and move towards peace.

-Civil rights are the basic rights that guarantee people fair treatment and freedom, no matter their race, gender, or background. They are important because they help make sure everyone is treated equally under the law. In a democratic society, civil rights let people have a voice and protect their freedom to speak, vote, and live freely. Without civil rights, some people could be unfairly left out or harmed.

-Learning about the civil rights movement helps us see how people fought for fairness and equal rights in the past. It shows the power of standing together to make change. This helps us understand why people today still protest and speak out for justice. We can learn from their courage and use those lessons to make things better now.

I learned that it took until the 70’s to get a law passed to support them. Secondly, I learned that there is still discrimination today. The reason they law got passed is the civil rights movement because they were inspired.

Civil rights is rights that belong to a certain group of people that all share one thing in common which they are treated differently then everyone else.

People with disabilities have faced many unfair challenges. In the past, they were often denied jobs, education, and even access to public places. Many buildings and sidewalks weren’t made for people using wheelchairs or with other mobility issues. Today, disability rights groups still fight for equal treatment, better healthcare, and fair housing. Groups like the AAPD (American Association of People with Disabilities) support protests and push for laws that protect people with disabilities.

2. What are 5 things you learned about the group you researched that you didn't know before completing this project?

• The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed in 1990 to protect people with disabilities.

• The “Capitol Crawl” was a big protest where people with disabilities crawled up the steps of the U.S. Capitol to show how hard life is without access.

• Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was one of the first laws to give civil rights to disabled people.

• Some protests, like the 504 Sit-In, lasted weeks and helped change the law.

• Many schools didn’t have to teach students with disabilities until the IDEA law was passed.

3. In your own words, what are civil rights and why are they important to a democratic society?

Civil rights are the basic rights that every person should have, like being treated fairly and equally. These rights protect people from being treated badly because of their race, gender, disability, or other differences. In a democracy, all people should have a voice and the same chances in life. Civil rights help make sure no group is left out or ignored.

2. While researching Hispanic Americans, I learned that they come from many different countries like Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and more, which makes their culture really diverse and interesting. I found out that Hispanic Americans have made a lot of important contributions to the United States, like in music, art, sports, and even politics. One cool thing I learned is that Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 to honor their culture and history. I also learned that some Hispanic Americans face challenges like being treated unfairly or having a hard time learning English.

3. Civil rights are the basic rights that all people should have to be treated equally and fairly. These include the right to vote, go to school, have a job, and live without being treated unfairly because of your race, gender, or religion. Civil rights are important because they help protect people from discrimination and make sure everyone has the same chances in life. They help create a more fair and just society where everyone can feel safe and respected.

• What challenges did/does the group you research face? What are current things the group is doing now to fight for civil rights?- The LGBTQ community faces challenges like not being included and homophobia. They have always been trying to fight for their rights and trying to get people to not discriminate against them. People in the community constantly throw protests so they can be seen and heard. There have also been court cases to provide them rights such as same-sex marriage.

• What are 5 things you learned about the group you researched that you didn’t know before completing this project?- I learned that there have been actual court cases for the LGBTQ community. I learned the parts of this community. I learned that these people feel like they don’t get included as much. I learned that LGBTQ cares a lot about AIDS. I learned that people in this community have gotten murdered.

• How can learning about the Civil Rights Movement help us understand current social justice movements?- Learning about this can help us understand many current social justice movements, from race to sexuality. It can help us to understand how people in every community deserve to be treated equally and fairly. There are still many protests and arguments about a lot of different issues, and the movement can help open up our minds to people who might be struggling for equality. Learning about the Civil Rights Movement can help students understand the different sides of every social issue.

The groups I researched faced a lot of discrimination and are now fighting for equality by creating organizations and passing laws to ensure equality and justice.

5 things I learned:

• Most of these organizations were founded by multiple people in the lgbt community

• Most of these groups protested

• The Matthew Shepard act was an act that prevented hate crime

• John aurther and Jim obergefell worked to make same sex marriage legal

• Most of these groups/acts were apart of court cases

-native Americans were excluded from protections of the constitution

-there were still voting issues in 2006

-the voting rights acts of 2006 was only a 25 year extension

-there were still civil rights movement was a very significant period of time in USA history

3.) civil rights are basic rights that all Americans have as written in the constitution. For example, citizens have the ability to vote and own property. But, those rights had to be fought for since not everyone was given equal opportunities. Still, those rights are expanding to who they apply to.

4.) by looking back at history, you can better understand what is happening in the world today. History tends to repeat himself. Peaceful protests have been helpful in achieving goals for decades. The civil rights movement composed of many different topics that people had to fight for and now people are protesting again for a variety of things.

• What challenges did/does the group you research face? What are current things (protests, legal cases, etc.) the group is doing now to fight for civil rights?

The LGBTQ community faced discrimination, many believed that the Homosexuals were communists because they had the same ideals. Many were often kicked out from their workplace or kicked out of their livings For being “gay” or “Trans”. Many felt like these people were psychos, or mentally ill people. Some current things that are happening are laws are passing the right to gay marriage, or helping Trans people getting the treatment they need.

• What are 5 things you learned about the group you researched that you didn't know before completing this project?

I didn’t know they called homosexuals at that time “ lavender scare”

I didn’t know they were kicked out of their workplace

The president ( McCarthy ) called them mentally ill

Elimination program for same-sex couples

Congresses passed a act called “ treatment for sexual psychopaths”

• In your own words, what are civil rights and why are they important to a democratic society?

Civil rights are the rights that every person should have, they should not be persecuted but instead be treated fairly by the law. Civil rights should/ can be expressed by your voice and your actions and should be held accountable on all sides.

Q3: Civil rights are rights for people to be treated equally by society. Cilvil rights can also protect individuals by the government. Specific laws like voting rights and the Indian Civil Rights act benefited people of color. Civil rights make sure all people no matter what race have a voice.

Q4: Learning about the Civil Rights Movement can help us understand the importance of why civil rights are good to have. People protest to try and earn their rights. Having these rights makes a difference because it substantiates that all people deserve to be equal. The rights are their to protect all people by law.

The group I researched was the Native American group. They faced many problems such as racism, poverty, police violence, and broken promises from the federal government. Native Americans were often ignored so AIM had to fight hard to be heard. Today, they are fighting to protect their culture, their land, and their rights. They speak out against issues like treaty rights and sacred places.

Question 2:

AIM was created in 1968 to fight against police brutality, AIM helped lead the 71 day occupation of Wounded Knee, native activists like Dennis Banks and Russell Means were part of AIM, the group wasn’t only about protests; they helped native communities also, AIM is still an organization today.

Question 4:

Learning about the civil rights movement helps us see how people fought for equal rights. It shows us that many problems from the past still exist today. We can learn from organizations like AIM to see how people are standing up for justice. It also shows us that change takes a lot of time and it takes a team to create change that lasts.

• Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated every year honoring the culture

3. Civil rights are the natural rights every citizen in America have. Civil rights are the basic freedoms and protections of everyone which is very important to a democratic society. They help make everyone treated equally and don’t discriminate among demographics. These civil rights help people express their opinions.

2.American Indian Movement (AIM)

5 things I learned from the group I researched was. Who the people in the group were. What the group was and their motive. Also the overall groups history.

3.Civil Rights are important in society because it’s so everyone can have equal rights and be treated equally. Also no one is lessened or no one is praised more than another.

The first thing I learned from the topic my group researched was that the voting rights act of 2006 was signed into the law on July 27, 2006. Next, I learned that the voting rights act of 2006 extended certain protections from the 1965 act for another 25 years. The third thing I learned is that in the civil rights act of 1991 significantly altered employment discrimination by granting plaintiffs the right to jury trials. Next, I learned that the voting rights act of 1965 boosted voter registration in the south. The final thing I learned is that the Indian civil rights act of 1968 extended the protections of the constitution to native Americans.

1) Americans with disabilities have faced many challenges, like being denied access to buildings, schools, and jobs. In the past, people with disabilities were often ignored or treated unfairly because of their differences. Even today, some places are still not fully accessible, and people still face discrimination. They support new laws, speak out on social media, and organize events to push for more inclusion and equality.

2) I learned about the 504 Sit-ins in 1977, where people with disabilities stayed in government buildings to demand their rights.

I didn’t know that in the Capitol Crawl in 1990, people actually crawled up the steps of the U.S. Capitol to show how hard it is without accessibility.

I learned that the Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990 and protects people from discrimination.

I found out that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act makes sure students with disabilities get the help they need in school.

I also learned that the AAPD is a powerful group that helps people with disabilities become leaders and speak up for their rights.
