Another major idea of Thomas Hobbes was that he believed that the only true form of government was the absolute monarchy. He expressed this a lot in his book, Leviathan. This belief stands behind his central idea that human beings are, at their core, selfish creatures.

How Thomas Hobbes Influenced the U.S. Government

His social contract theory basically said that the government should serve and protect all the people in the society. This means that it should act only with the consent of the people. This influenced the U.S. constitution because he felt that without laws, people would be at constant conflict. He believed that all people were selfish, and that we needed a government that would protect us all, but still have to answer to the people. He believed that the government should protect people, liberty and property, which are all principles found in the US constitution.
