I chose this passage because it talks about how the Jews were being betrayed by the people that they once had trust in. Their own neighbors were the ones that were destroying their homes and shops which had a lot of hard work put into them. This passage stood out to me because I think that it is shocking that the people the Jewish had trust in before Hitler came to power were now turning against them. The text "Parallel Journeys" quotes, "Then she whirled around at the circle of silent faces staring from the sidewalks and windows,...and she screamed "Why are you people doing this to us?" This passage makes me wonder why did the Nazis and people who supported the Nazis do this to the people who had done nothing wrong? I chose this passage because it talks about how Helen and Siegfried made a plan to give up their small child. They had to do this because the Nazis were starting to invade Holland (during WWII) and Siegfried believed that they would have to go into hiding. They wanted Doris to have the best life that she could, and it is shocking to me that this was what they,and most likely many other people, had to do for their children. The text "Parallel Journeys" states, "We wanted three-year-old Doris to have every chance to stay alive, even if it were not possible for us." This makes me wonder will Doris be okay, and will she make it out alive from the war? What will the future look like for Doris if she makes it out safely with another family? I chose this passage because it is talking about Helen's first experience at the concentration camp. It mentions that after surviving her first "Selection" (she got sent to a concentration camp instead of a gas chamber) she and Siegfried said a quick goodbye. They did this after all women were ordered to move quickly into a building, and she and Siegfried never expected to never see each other again. This was heartbreaking for me because I realized how much the Nazis took away from the Jews, and how they did not care if families, couples, or friends had to be ripped apart from each other without them even knowing. The text, "Parallel Journeys" states, "Not expecting that we would never see each other again, Siegfried and I hardly said goodbye." This makes me wonder if Helen and Siegfried will stay strong without each other through this terrible time. I chose this passage because it explains how the children who were put into hiding had mixed opinions about their parents coming home. It says that the children found it hard to connect with their own parents after everything had happened. So much had went on in between the time they were separated from their parents, and the time that they were reunited. This was very hard for me to read, because I couldn't image how hard it was for those children to have to accept their new lives. The text, "Parallel Journeys" states, "They were glad that the mother or father had survived, but so much had happened, so many things had changed while they were apart, that it was impossible to love them in the same ways as before." This makes me wonder if the children ever thought much about there parents when they were apart, did they only focus on their new lives?
