While I loved my job, it was a daunting task to be required to keep up with all the the billable moments and being required to be in the classroom for a full day dealing with emotional behaviors. Burnout is and was inevitable. I felt very disconnected from not only Park Center, since we worked in the schools, but I didn't feel like was connected to FWCS since I was a Park Center employee. I am just sharing this because I know that it was mentioned about bringing on case managers to help with the case loads, but I would stress the importance of making sure they feel connected and not overwhelmed, not sure the best way to do that. Most of the course work/training we receive is in providing mental health services. I understand that college and career readiness is important, however, I feel like someone to assist with college and career would be more beneficial rather than individuals to assist with mental health. Again, school counselors are trained to provide mental health services and care. We are battling their mental health struggles so frequently that academics are the last thing on their mind. Then, they return from treatment, a safety plan is completed, and no follow up is done by the family OR they can't get an appointment for 3 months out. Meanwhile, we (counselors) are here, left to pick up the pieces and make sure this kiddo can get back on track academically and support their emotional needs. It's nearly impossible. We have more and more kids taking medical homebound, having chronic illness forms on file, or needing an alternative learning environment than ever before.
