I have chosen the writer, María Lejárraga, one of the most important Spanish playwrights in the first half of the twentieth century, because she was unfairly forgotten while she lived. She was born in San Millán de la Cogolla, La Rioja, in 1874. She was also known under the pseudonym of María Martínez Sierra and is considered one of the main promoters of the feminist movement in Spain. She grew up in a well-off family and studied to become a teacher. She actually started to work as one when she finished those studies a few years later. She was really gifted for writing literature but, at this time, this was not well regarded by society and then, she had to give it up for a few years. Some years later, she married Gregorio Martínez Sierra at the age of 26, and she sorted out her problem and began to publish her production under her husband’s name. Rumors soon began to spread that Gregorio’s theatrical works were actually his wife’s. At the end of his life , Gregorio signed a confession acknowledging it. She even wrote some other plays signing them under the name of other authors’ names, as she did with “The Peacock” with the pseudonym of Eduardo Marquina.

In addition to her facet as a writer, she stood out as an activist. She was a committed feminist fighter and a militant in the Socialist Party. She was elected MP to the Congress of the Republic for the province of Granada in 1933. The Spanish Civil War forced her to go into exile in Argentina, from where she never returned. In 2012, two books were published in which she finally was the protagonist. She died in Argentina in 1974.
