The economic activity in the municipality is basically related to agricultural, livestock, artisanal production and basic services, requiring the acquisition of raw materials, materials and inputs, which come from Guatemala City and the department of Quetzaltenango.

The main productive activity is agriculture, occupying 50.24% of the total production, the main crops being: maize, beans, potatoes, vegetables, coffee. Other productive activities are crafts and salaried work, representing 10% of the population in both cases.

The majority of families live from salaried work on the farms of the Boca Costa del Sur, in the textile factories of Quetzaltenango and from the sale of surpluses from agricultural production.

The current situation of displaced families has broken this fragile system. Agricultural production was wiped out, work in the Boca Costa (day labor, mainly in coffee and sugar) decreased, reconstruction work requires on-site labor and market buyers do not wait for the replacement of production (agricultural or artisanal).
