They are also herbivores and eat on the algae growing along the rocky shores and underwater. And in the water they swim with a snake like motion and they hold themselves against the bottom with their long claws in order to graze.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Marine iguanas are the only lizards on earth that spends time in the ocean. They also live only on the Galapagos Islands and like many Galapagos species they have adapted to an island lifestyle. And although they feed in the water, marine iguana are predominantly terrestrial. And they are often observed warming themselves in the sun and they nest along the shore Marine Iguanas are also known for their very efficient salt glands where they "sneeze" out salt. And in order for them to prevent dehydration they expel salt without expelling water so they have specialized glands that remove salt from their blood. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>These reptiles they have this incredible ability to shrink in length and overall size. They do this in times of reduced food availability during  El Nino climate events. They may also shrink by as much as 20% because the now smaller individuals now require less food when they shrink themselves. But once their preferred algae return to high levels they quickly regain the lost size. They are endemic to the Galapagos Island and are they only marine lizard species in the world.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a result of their very small geographic area the Marine Iguanas are thought to be vulnerable to extinction. Even though they have complete legal protection in the Galapagos Island the invasive species continue to threaten subspecies on some Islands. species such as cats, dogs, pigs, and germs and other species brought to the island by humans attack the Marine Iguana eggs and juveniles. It's also very difficult to eradicate invasive species from the island so the problem is likely to continue to threaten Marine Iguanas populations.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In history it is believed that around 4.5 million years ago, marine iguanas evolved from land iguanas that were brought to the Galapagos and adapted to a seafaring life in order to survive on the islands. Marine iguanas typically spend only a few minutes underwater eating but can spend up to 30 minutes at a time submerged. And male marine iguanas can grow to 4.3 feet (1.3. m) long, while females are generally about 2 feet (0.6 m) long. And they can also dive more than 65 feet (20m) underwater. And unlike lizards, marine iguanas have blunt snouts that help them feed on algae underwater. They also have flattened tails that help them swim efficiently.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Scientists figure that land-dwelling iguanas from South America must have drifted out to sea millions of years ago on logs or other debris, eventually landing on the Galapagos. From that species have emerged marine iguanas, which spread to nearly all the islands of the archipelago. Each island hosts marine iguanas of unique size, shape and color. They are actually gentle herbivores, surviving exclusively on underwater algae and seaweed. Their short blunt snouts and small razor sharp teeth help them scrape the algae off rocks. And their laterally flattened tails let them move crocodile-like through the water.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The adult Marine Iguana can dive up to 9ft. But the younger Marine Iguanas they feed at low tide as they don't have  the strength to dive to the same depths as the adults. Although they has very long claws and teeth they don't use them for tearing flesh they use it for eating algae and seaweed. Even though they can swim underwater they can't breathe underwater because they lack gills which are necessary to extract oxygen from water instead, they just hold their breath for a really long time. Marine Iguanas can hold their breath for a staggering 60 minutes.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Male Marine Iguanas turn very bright shades of blue, pink, green, a d res during mating season to attract females. They turn black once the mating season is over. It is a known fact that the Galapagos hawk is the marine iguanas greatest natural predator. They will hunt the adult iguanas.Galapagos hawks have been seen sitting on top of marine iguanas as the  iguanas run around trying to shake them off and the iguanas sometimes succeed. The iguanas are also extremely fast and can quite easily outrun the hawks if they see them in time.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Marine Iguanas and Mockingbirds have a symbiotic relationship: the mockingbird let of a distinctive call when there is a Galapagos hawk in the area. The Marine Iguanas recognize this warning call and flee for cover. The black color of the Marine Iguana helps it to absorb so much sunlight as possible. Since they are cold-blooded reptiles they often get cold after a dive in the ocean, they lose a lot of their body heat and may only be around 10 degrees celsius. With that being said they need to sunbathe to bring their body temperatures back up, but this slows them down and makes them very vulnerable but it's a good thing that their black color helps them absorb heat as fast as possible. </div>]]></description>
