I'm also spending time setting up and reinforcing independent reading--goal setting, record-keeping, and choice projects for completed books. They need time for their other classes and for day-to-day, job specific words and training. They need the course to be leveled where they are in the room with similar level students. We also need system 44/Read 180 software to help them where they are at and give them tests that show true growth for kids that are that low. If I hear that I have to address this material once a week, then I will but it is not material that is appropriate for our kids every day. We need to supplement and be given money to buy materials to supplement especially for our newcomers. The feminsts unit has such a high lexile that I enjoy the content more but maybe we use a website like rewordify.com where you copy and paste the materials into a box and it will change the reading level like newsela does so they are accessible. The ERWC curriculum needs to be more accessible. It is too challenging for the majority and they are struggling a lot.
