Hi, my name is Mackenzie Chelette and I am 21. I live in Jacksonville, Florida with my parents and my sister. Personally, I like to stay busy, so if I’m not working, usually I’m tending to a new hobby or class. I am taking this class to dig through all the different career paths that I could pursue in business. I’ve already got my Associates of Arts, but I want to continue to get a bachelor's degree. So, I chose to begin taking classes to grow my interest in business to see if something new could come from it. I’ve been anxiously waiting for this class to start for a few weeks so I could finally put some roots down and make progress in my degree. While I know this class is going to provide a challenge, I’m so excited to see what the upcoming weeks will bring. I’m hopeful that this class will bloom something wonderful for all of us. I’m rooting for everyone, best of luck!

While reading this article, it became apparent how important a good manager is. It is a delicate balance, especially when it comes to the first line and team lead managers. Having one that is too harsh or unwilling to help through issues is not going to motivate the employees. Whereas, a manager that is too laid back and gives into every whim will not keep the employees where they need to be. If a manager is too relaxed and not focused, it could rub off on the employees. They must be approachable and understand, while also being firm and maintaining the goals of the company.

This video focused more on the locals of an area and just how different they can be. He made points on how people react differently to situations depending on where they were raised or live. It just brought back how important it is to take the time to learn and understand every place you might put a business in.

In module 4-2 reading, we learned about cognitive biases. They were something I had never considered a part of my life until I read this section. I realized how often my personal biases effected the way I looked and approached situations. When it comes to business, our personal biases have no room. We need to be able to logically consider all possibilities without our own emotions getting in the way. Having a group of people work on a project would definitely help, providing it occurred in a respectful way so everyone could be heard. We are all guilty of allowing our biases to run our lives. In decision planning and making, we must attempt to be logical and unbiased to provide the best plan for our business.

While reading our modules, it has become apparent how important it is for everyone to be on the same page. One of the common key elements in each module is a common purpose, or having everyone understand what direction the business is heading. One of the four key elements written by Edgar Schein has a common purpose. Most of these key elements include all the employees having the same understanding of the end goals. According the Mr. Schein, the next key element is coordinated effort. This is management making sure everything from products to employees is being used in the most effective way. The third is specialization and division of labor. The main point is finding the most effective way to run the different sections of the business. The fourth is hierarchy of authority, which is how it seems, a hierarchy. It explains ranking of each level, such as management, leading back to module 1. Which is where we learned about all the different levels of management from the top level all the way to first line managers. Overall, having a designated purpose, or mission, is necessary for a company to be successful and functional.

Reading module 6-1 about human resources brought a lot of thought about the legal issues that go with a business. Such as the recruiting section of Md. 6 goes into detail about the layers of simply putting together a job analysis and specification. To begin interviewing people, these steps must be completed. They provide the safety net to cover the company. Just in case potential employees feels there was some type of discrimination. Once an employee has been found and given the job, the paperwork does not end. They will still need to situate any training, understanding the policies, procedures, the list goes on. This is all stuff behind the scenes of hiring someone new. It does not include making sure the individual is good at what they do, gets along with co-workers, customers, etc. While I always new it was important to pick the right candidate, I had never thought too much about the legal processes of the whole situation.

While reading the section on barriers of communication, it talked about how easy it is to mess up communication. Especially if you simply think about differences in households. While there are similarities, everyone's household does something different. Certain words or actions can mean a totally different thing in one household than another. Work is not the type of place you want a miscommunication to happen. In one sense it could lead to being reporting to HR, even if how it was received was not intentional. Or it could interfere with the business and disrupt the plans in place. So it is important to be cautious about the way you speak to others at work. Along with ensuring everyone is on the same page before ending the communication.

While reading this section, we got introduced to multiple types of leadership styles. It was mind blowing how many different types there are. I was also able to compare it to my experience and decide what leadership styles I've experienced. I do not have much experience in the work place so some of these styles were just something I had heard of. Specifically the Autocratic/Authoritarian reminds me of all the movies where people work in office buildings. In the movies, decisions seemed to be passed down so quickly without much communication occurring. The Laissez- Fair/ Free reign style is one leadership style I would probably not want to be too involved with. Simply because there is no real leadership and I do think some type of guidelines are necessary. While in certain situations a little free reign and the chance to be creative is important. Too much freedom can cause the business to lose its vision and end goals. Especially if the employees are not doing what is in the best interest of the company.

It is a good way to ask the right questions for ensuring that a business is running as smoothly as it should.
