I Like what the person said to the right. Add to that a simple and effective way to monitor student usage.(and getting it set up and learning how to use it effectively) It sounds like we are getting away from traditional teaching and using technology for everything. Do colleges only use technology? Are we not going to give our students tests that are pencil and paper?

I think we focus too much on using technology to replace “antiquated” assessment measures as our method of incorporating tech in our classrooms saying that we want to use tech resources to collect and grade student work.
I think that successful tech integration happens when we use technology to enhance and develop student understanding of concept.
Tech CAN be used to collect and grade student work, but a classroom successfully using tech should have students solving real-world problems and making connections between different math concepts and representations while fluidly using tech resources.

My Opinion

I think technology should be used to enhance learning. It can be used to collect pictures of work. This is helpful to reduce paperwork which is nice.

However, there are cases where we COULD use technology to teach our students about applicable math. We could teach students how math and technology are actually linked. This would be the ultimate goal.

There are always ways to use technology to enhance participation and engagement. Padlet has been a useful tool with reviews. Students upload photos of work. Padlet is also great at collecting formative assessment data. Students like it because it isn't paper pencil. It utilizes something they are familiar with.

Another use of technology in our classrooms is the use of desmos/go guardian. I recently allowed my seniors to use chromebooks on a test. I have never done this but go guardian allowed me to ensure they were only using desmos and not researching answers. This makes it more realistic to start giving computerized tests which is the direction we are going with state testing.

Last use I see, is there are applets out there that can reinforce concepts. These are great uses for our chromebooks. We need to find when and where to implement them. This should be happening during our discussions about the next 5 days.

Long answer but I have lots of thoughts on how the 1-1 devices can be used beyond just collecting work.

In a math class, technology can be very helpful, but not at all times. If we are using it effectively, there needs to be a signal between teachers and students for when the laptop needs to be down, and when it can be used. In addition, all students need equal access. In classes without classroom sets, this is difficult.

Technology in the class for me would be used as a way for students to look for additional resources in math that would help them in learning the material being taught. It would also be used as a way for students to take tests and get comfortable typing in answers using a keyboard as well as Desmos.
