Using these three listening is in class can have negative consequences because you can possibly hear things incorrectly and do things wrong and not learn something you need to know and get bad grades or just get in trouble in general. If you are selective listening, you’ll only hear what you want. If you’re pretend listening, you’ll think you know what’s going on and not know what’s going on and just respond “Yeah, uh huh” If you’re spacing out, you aren’t listening at all therefore you won’t learn and will fail.

Selective listening can make you less likely to hear info you need, and then you’ll not know all that you need to know to perform a task, or do something to the best of your ability. You won’t know that something is due in two days if all you heard was “assignment.” Pretend listening means you don’t listen to anything at all, so then you won’t know anything. If a coworker is asking you about your joint work schedule and you only say “uh huh, yep” instead of giving them the info they want, you’re ruining your work relations. Spacing out means that if you’re at a meeting and you spend most of it daydreaming, you won’t know what your boss wanted you to know afterwards, and you might lose your job.
