The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall is a retelling of the classic folktale. The story follows three pig siblings who set out to build their own houses. Each pig builds their home using different materials: the first uses straw, the second uses sticks, and the third builds with bricks. The Big Bad Wolf soon arrives, trying to blow down each house one by one. He has an easy time blowing down the house made of straw and the house made of sticks, while the house made of brick manages to withstand his huffing and puffing. After blowing down the first two houses, the wolf goes in to eat each pig. But, after being unable to blow down the third house, the wolf attempts to climb in through the chimney. The third pig was luckily prepared and placed a pot of boiling water in the fireplace. When the wolf fell in, the pig in turn ate him!

Personal Response: I enjoyed reading/listening to this story because of the detailed illustrations and distinct personalities of the characters. Finding a good message within the story was hard, but it was very engaging.

In the time leading up to Beezus's birthday, she continues to be embarrassed and annoyed by Ramona but emphasizes that she still loves her sister. But when Ramona manages to ruin her birthday cake, Beezus realizes that she sometimes does not love her sister. Her mother and Aunt Beatrice then reveal that they did not always get along but have grown closer with time. This makes Beatrice feel hope and happiness about her difficult relationship with Ramona.

Personal Response: I enjoyed reading this story because I was able to connect with it as a younger sister. I found the book to be very touching, especially when learning about Beezus's struggle with guilt. The book captures the difficult but loving dynamics of family in a relatable way. This story perfectly captured the simple joys in life, like making snowmen on a snowy day. The illustrations and text helped to create a sort of nostalgia, making the story more engaging to me. Great for read alouds!

In this book, Amelia Bedelia's aunt, Aunt Mary, announces her engagement to Bob, exciting the entire family. Amelia is honored when Aunt Mary asks for her help with wedding preparations and excitedly agrees. But, like usual, Amelia quickly finds herself confused with certain tasks and phrases used when discussing the wedding. Although she misunderstands many situations and instructions during the story, her unique problem-solving skills shine through. She is able to turn her disasters into delightful moments, showing her good intentions, and the wedding turns out beautiful.

Personal Response:

This is a fun and heartwarming short-chapter book. I enjoyed reading this collection in elementary school but had not read this one previously, and I liked it just as much as the rest. It could be useful for reminding students that mistakes lead to learning when approached with a positive attitude, like Amelia.

This one may be controversial for the classroom, but it was a great book. It perfectly captured the feelings of being different in a place where everyone feels the same. I felt the illustrations added a lot to the comic book structure and made it very engaging.

Brave Molly explores themes of anxiety, friendship, and courage through illustrations. The story begins when Molly looks out her window to see a group of classmates walking together. She wants to join them, but she sees a shadowy monster peeking from behind a tree, reflecting her fears and insecurities. She decides to follow her classmates, but as she follows, more and more shadowy monsters begin to follow her. She finally decides to confront her fears as they follow, breaking free from what is holding her back. In the end, she gains to courage to just say "Hi", and the story ends with her playing with her new friends.

Personal Response:

When I began reading this story, I was shocked to find there was no text. The story is told only through illustrations, which was very unique and interesting to me. The illustrations had so much power, reminding me that pictures can tell a story the same way text can.

He finds a pair of trumpeter swans nesting in Canada, who soon welcome five baby swans. One of these babies, Louis, is unable to make a sound, so his father vows to find a way for him to communicate. As Louis is learning to read with the help of Sam, his father steals a real brass trumpet from a music store, hoping it will give Louis a voice. Louis excels in playing the trumpet, becoming a musician who performs in parks and clubs to repay the cost of the trumpet. Throughout the story, Louis manages to earn enough money to repay the music store and win another swan, Serena's, heart. They finally return to the wilderness to start their own family.

I read this book for my Author Study assignment, but I added it because it was such a good read! It was very heartwarming and had a great message about self-discovery.

This is a rhyming story about a family's adventure in the outdoors. The family, comprised of children, a baby, and their dog, left on an adventure to find a bear. They continue to chant, "We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared." This continues throughout the story as they encounter various challenges along the way. After a long trip through different landscapes, like grassy meadows and deep rivers, the family finally reaches the cave. But, when they find the bear, they suddenly realize they are scared and retrace their steps back home frantically. They run home, slam the door shut, and hide under the covers, happy to have escaped. The bear looks from the outside, not angry, but curious.

Personal Response:

This is such a fun read! I loved the author's use of rhyming and the great illustrations. I also liked the use of repetition, and I believe it would make for a good read-aloud.

He decides to test the creation of words and comes up with the word "frindle" as a new word for "pen." His new word begins to catch on as his classmates and, eventually, the town begin to use it. Mrs. Granger rejects it at first, arguing that words must adhere to their proper usage, which leads to escalating conflict. The word is soon picked up by the media and becomes a national craze, making Nick a sort of celebrity. Many years later, Nick realizes that Mrs. Granger was supportive of his new word, but wanted him to work hard for its success. The story ends with Nick, now an adult, reflecting on how "frindle" has entered the dictionary and changed his life.

This book was very entertaining and enjoyable to read. I appreciated the message of creativity and influence. It is a great option for young readers.

One day, Duncan goes to grab his crayons but instead finds a stack of letters. The crayons decided to each leave a letter to Duncan, explaining why they were upset and why they quit. Beige feels unappreciated, while Blue is tired of being used for large areas. The letters all reflect each color's personality and their frustrations. Finally, Duncan comes up with a creative way to use all the colors in a way that celebrates their uniqueness and helps resolve their feelings.

This was a fun, creative short story. I liked the way each letter perfectly reflected each color and what it is typically used for.

This is a story that is interactive with its readers, beginning with a bus driver instructing readers to make sure the pigeon doesn't drive the bus while he is away. As soon as he leaves, the pigeon appears, doing everything he can to convince readers to let him drive the bus. He throws tantrums, begs, and pleads as his antics become more and more exaggerated throughout the story. The story encourages the readers to say "no" as the pigeon continues to try to trick them. The story ends with the bus driver returning, but the pigeon spots a truck, making him want to try to drive again.

Personal Response:

I liked this story's interactive style, making me believe it would be perfect for a read-aloud. It is just a fun, short story great for younger elementary students.

In this story, a little chicken interrupts her Papa eagerly as he attempts to read her bedtime stories. Every time he begins a tale, the little chicken jumps in, interrupting to save the characters from danger before it's too late. While her interruptions are well intended, they begin to tire Papa while he is trying to read. She finally offers to read the story herself, but Papa quickly falls asleep, ending the story.

I enjoyed reading this short story. It was light-hearted and fun, with a heartwarming ending. It would make for a great read-aloud story or addition to the classroom library.

I liked how relatable the dog is in this story. He enjoys reading books because they feel like an escape, which is how I feel about my favorite books. The illustrations were very fun and engaging as well.

Corduroy is a stuffed bear that lives in a department store. He is waiting for someone to take him home and is disappointed when a little girl, Lisa, shows interest in him but is not allowed to due to his missing button. After that encounter, he decides to search the store for his missing button but is unlucky in his quest. Luckily, the next morning, Lisa returns with her own money, taking him home and sewing a new button on.

Personal Response:

I appreciated the emphasis on friendship and acceptance in this story. It also reminded me of the connections I had with childhood toys, making it sort of nostalgic for me.
