Portrait Painting
2020
Acrylic paint on paper

This piece is an acrylic portrait of my great-grandmother. I never got to meet her but I know she was a vibrant, strong and very kind person. My goal with this painting was to capture my great-grandmother’s personality and make the piece as realistic as possible. I used acrylic paints on acrylic paper to create this painting. This piece required many layers of paint to get the perfect lighting, skin tone and details. Overall I am very happy with this portrait, I think the cheerful expression and precise details draw the viewer in.

3D Lego Drawing
2019
Prismacolor Pencils on Paper

This is a drawing from early in the school year. This piece is of a lego structure. This drawing was a great way to practice accurate perspective and shadows. I used prismacolor pencil crayons for this drawing, they blend very easily so they were great for adding shadows and highlights. All in all, I think this piece is realistic and I am happy with the way this drawing turned out.

2020
Prismacolors on brown paper

This piece is from the observational drawing assignment; I chose to draw a sculpture of four hands attached because it was calming for me to look at because, in a way, it showed unity. I incorporated extension in my piece by adding tone and value. To build light and shades, I used pink and white Prismacolors instead of pencils because I wanted to make the sketching more fun and less monotonic. To me, it was a successful piece because the end product looks realistic, and I achieved the contrast I wished to accomplish.

Tupac changed the face of gangsta-rap aesthetic in the 1990s and has sold 75 million albums to this date. I decided to paint this piece because like for many he is an inspiration to me. His ability to be talk freely and do it in such a create matter is inspiring. For this piece I used acrylic paints on paper and let me say this was not an easy task. The painting itself involved countless hours of blending, mixing colours, and layering in order to achieve the highlights and different shades you see. Overall I'm very pleased with my work on this piece as it looks realistic and I created what I attended to do.

I decided to draw this piece because I got the turtle from Mexico on a family trip. I decided to add the extension of colour to make the drawing stand out, using different markers and pencil crayons to match the original sculpture. The shading took lots of time and blending in order to achieve a realistic and 3D drawing. Overall I really like how my observational drawing turned out.

2020
Acrylic paint on paper bag

For this Unusual Portrait Assignment I decided to do mine on a paper bag. I completed this assignment in quarantine, and I feel it is one of my best pieces! I spent a lot of time and effort outside of class time to finish it. This portrait represents how people are influenced to be "perfect" so in result get nose jobs, face lifts to essentially feel prettier. Which shouldn't be the case because everyone is perfect just the way they are. I drew it on a paper bag because people will also shop for makeup and beauty products to feel more pretty. I chose barbie jewelry on my portrait because I wanted to mimic the perfection that is associated, and idealized with this character in society. I used all my portrait skills I've learned in class this year, and I feel like it turned out really well!

2020
Digital

Given how hectic life has been for the last few months, time hasn't felt exactly real to me, more like this strange speeding up and slowing down. I decided to create a piece that was inspired by that! Like a motorcyclist speeding dangerously fast among stilled cars with no foreseeable end, I wanted to express that movement into some kind of metaphor in my art. This one took me a while (as compared to other works I've done) and I chose a digital format because there were more experimental techniques I could try there. I tried to make the work both realistic (through the line-art) and abstract (through the slightly displaced and bright colour). I liked the end product, but will be improving it and maybe even attempt a complete re-do!

2020
Nature in two glasses

This piece was inspired by the major pandemic that is happening all around the world. Because I do not have the access to most artistic materials I have decided to take on a different approach. I have tried to portray the fact that mother nature has given us so much good and beauty and yet we waste so much of it. The reason why I used two glasses the same is to show that it is the same world just now with damage. In one glass I have gathered new leaves and fully bloomed flowers and in the other I have gathered less but dead leaves and flowers. This is to show that we are taking what we have and giving it away while killing what little we have left. I really liked the way it turned out but next time I would add some more colour and texture.

2020
Acrylic

It was true serendipity that, amidst the confusion of March 9th, I managed to convince Ms.Walsh to take this work home with me for the break. The portrait depicts my grandfather; Paul Smith. He passed away some years ago with a vast material legacy - composed of all the antiques he collected over the years, and stories he eternalized in words and pictures. However, his legacy lacks what I consider to be the most effective means of honouring someone; a portrait. Not a photograph, but a painting that has evidently been laboured over for some time- every detail of his appearance rendered minutely, as so the final product can be hung, with confidence, to salute his memory Thus, I attempted to recapture him in a painting. This was a difficult task, as, although I possessed scores of photos, his personality was immense and multilayered - tricky to document in a two dimensional portrait by an amateur artist. I turned to the impressionist movement for inspiration. Egon Schiele, in particular, acted as a foundation. I dove into the act of painting; making sweeping brushstrokes across the page to match what I observed in photographs. Every class, I deconstructed his face into shadows and light; renders it on paper, only to paint over it the next class. This allowed me to build up layers that reflected his personality. Along with staying true to his physical appearance, I attempted to show his character - his tendency to dream revealed by a gleam in his eyes, and slight madness demonstrated by the vibrant colours and haphazard brush strokes. The final product is painterly; textured, and bearing the sense that it is not quite finished. I like this unfinished feeling, however. As my Papa, like myself, was a perfectionist who loathed finishing projects. It felt good to hang this portrait in my room - glorying its imperfect state.

2020
2B pencil and drawing paper

This entire drawing is about time, the measuring tape could represent how as time passes a person grows mentally mature and larger in size, the measuring tape could also be time itself, the numbers as ages it could be the brightest years or the years that you were drowned in darkness. This is more of a abstract way of thinking the hand which would be a person places his hands gently onto murder cases newspaper this perhaps a passion of looking through these newspaper but he can never find anything, showing that he can't let go, no matter how long it has been since he has researched, this always holding on could always apply to anything in this world. To be honest this art doesn't look abstract nor is it visually meant to be abstract but to every person there might be a different meaning.

I chose to paint a night sky because I wanted to explore the medium and oil pant blends very well which would provide more realism when painting a night sky. One hardship that I faced when working on this project was working with layers. Without layering the colours the blue in the middle wouldn't be blended very well. Overall I think I've done a decent job in creating this piece and I wish to use more oil paint in the future.
