My Professional Perspective is working as a high school counselor. I aspire to earn a Ph.D in Guidance and Counseling; ultimately becoming a Professor or curriculum consultant. This legal guide is to assist counselors and parents in the current political climate under Donald J. Trump. I created this Padlet to help educate parents, counselors, and administrators on how to protect and ensure the education of English Language Learners. The current administration in the White House has not favored immigrants or minorities. This padlet was created to ensure that English Languages Learners are aware of the laws that protect their education.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the current counselor of Dr. Robert Pierce Early Childhood School in Irving, TX about the current laws in place to protect English Language Learners under the Trump Administration.

Do you feel ELL are properly protected with the current laws and statues under this presidency?

Ms.Montes stated that the students in her district are well protected and should have no fear for the time being.

Do you feel ELL receive an equal opportunity as other students in the district?

Ms.Montes states the district she teaches in has a high population of English Language Learners. Ms. Montes also states that the district goes above and beyond to help students and their families. Ms. Montes also feel that the students receive an abundant of help and can feel like they are receiving extra opportunities.

Best Practices for English Language Learners

Ms. Montes noted a few practices that I feel are vital for a successful program.

1) "Follow any instructions given by the Director of Counseling Services". To stay out of any legal trouble it is important to follow the protocol. The Director of Counseling Services has the best interest of the students in mind and will always ensure the education of the student holds the highest priority.

2) Host meetings to educate the parents of the rights and any changes made. Keeping the parents of the students up to date ensures that the parents trust the school. Meetings help parents stay proactive.

3) Give parents the final decision to determine the type of education their students will receive. Parents should make a decision based on the test results.

Emerging Issues

Despite the current political climate Ms. Montes does not force any issues with ELL students receiving an equal education. Ms. Montes is unaware of any new policies or laws that negatively effect the education of English Language Learners.

https://www.irvingisd.net/Page/3909

The Migration Policy Institute wrote a story titled "Trump and DeVos: What Could the New Administration Spell for English Learner and Immigrant Students?"

The article consists of various facts that justify the concern of many educators even those outside of English Language Learning. The article first addresses the lack of experience help by Betsy DeVos to make her a viable person for the position of Board of Education. The article also states that even though there are laws like Plyler v. Doe implemented to ensure education equality, many schools and districts are not educating their staff on these laws. With the current fight against immigrants this is effecting students and families. Many front offices of the school are not aware of the rights English Language Learns possess and this is an issue because of the parents of English Language Learners are unaware of the rights granted to them. Overall the lack of education on both sides is creating an epidemic of students missing out on education.

"Trump and DeVos: What Could the New Administration Spell for English Learner and Immigrant Students?"

It states that English Language Learners learned in English in half the amount of time. The article also states that ELL are more likely to enroll in higher level classes in middle school and high school.
